Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says his old club will avoid signing Lionel Messi.

Carragher has said he would 'love to see Messi in the Premier League' but claims his style of play would not be suited to Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Sky Sport pundit believes the only destination from the Argentine in the English top-flight is Manchester City.

'I hope so, I would love to see Messi in the Premier League,' the former Red told Sky Sports when the attacking sensation would join the English top-flight. 

'I want to watch him, I want to analyse him. The obvious place, the only place he can really go in is Manchester City.

'With the history he's got with the manager Pep and the financial clout the club have got.

'I don't think Liverpool will go anywhere near that situation. Financially, number one, but also because of the way Liverpool play. They're a lot more energetic maybe than City. City are more technical and that would suit Messi a bit more.

'But how you get that deal across the line with the figures involved, I'm not too sure. It's mind-boggling.' 

Although Messi is said to have a €700m release clause, it is believed the Argentine may have a clause that could see him terminate his contract unilaterally.

Should that be the case, Messi could leave the Nou Camp for free this summer.

As it stands, Manchester City are reportedly prepared to offer Barcelona £89.5million plus Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Eric Garcia for Messi. 

If Messi agrees terms with City, he will be reunited with Pep Guardiola following an incredible career at the Nou Camp - scoring an astonishing 634 goals and creating 285 assists in 731 appearances for the Spanish giants.
