Fraud victims told to ring Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's call centre as police put crime to the back of the queue

Fraud victims complain they are being denied justice as police no longer routinely investigate the crimes.
As of this month, anyone who walks into a police station or rings 999 to say they have been scammed is told to ring a Government-funded call centre or visit a website instead.
The Action Fraud phoneline is not manned by police or civilian staff, but by employees of a private firm that also runs hotlines for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and BBC.

Official figures show crime rates are falling but fraud is believed to be soaring thanks to the internet, costing the country an estimated £73 billion a year.
The number of calls received by Action Fraud has risen from 58,914 in 2010-11 to 285,793 in 2012-13. However, fewer than half of these were passed on to police to investigate fully, and only about one in six led to a court case.
The Home Office said: ‘In the past year Action Fraud has received more than 285,000 calls while its website allows people to report fraud online quickly and easily. By acting as a single point of contact, Action Fraud is also able to spot patterns and link seemingly unrelated incidents, helping to identify organised criminal gangs.’
