Steenkamp met her ex

Model Reeva Steenkamp met her ex-boyfriend two days before she was gunned down, it will be claimed in a television show to be aired tonight.

Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius - who is currently on bail after being charged with her murder - reportedly twice interrupted the meeting between the model and the man she went out with for five years, Warren Lahoud.

Miss Steenkamp, 29, was shot through the toilet door by Pistorius, in the early hours of St Valentines Day.

He claims he had thought she was an intruder.

Mr Lahoud, who runs a South African vegetable exporting business, said he met his former girlfriend for a coffee in innocent circumstances.

But he reveals in BBC Three’s documentary 'Oscar Pistorius…What really Happened?' - due to be aired at 9pm tonight -  that the Paralympian known as the Blade Runner twice telephoned Miss Steenkamp within twenty minutes during their meeting.

Mr Lahoud, who lives near Johannesburg, said Pistorius knew about him and had even met him.

He said: 'I’ve met him twice and there was never anything negative out of it at all. (It was) fine…no problem at all.'

But he did ask her about Pistorius telephoning her twice on her mobile during their get together.

'I said is everything ok. "I mean he’s phoned twice already, every twenty minutes". I asked her that question. She said "there’s nothing wrong".'

It comes as friends close to Pistorius claim he is a ‘broken man’ on the verge of suicide, and as his lawyers battle to get his bail conditions relaxed.

In the same documentary family friend Mike Azzie, who has known the athlete since he was a child and who trained racehorses for the star, said the sportsman was a 'broken man' after he was tasked with selling his racehorses to raise money to pay for spiralling legal fees.

Mr Azzie said Pistorius regularly talks about Steenkamp as he awaits his next court appearance on June 4.

He said: 'He just always seems to mention Reeva and to ask us to pray for her and her family.

'But most of all, you've got to understand that we are there for him and we will always be his friend.

'He has no confidence in his tone of voice and he is just a man that is almost like someone that is walking around in circles and doesn't know where he is going.

The 'Blade Runner' has denied murder, claiming he shot her through a bathroom door thinking she was an intruder in an innocent accident.

Police are keen to study text messages on Miss Steenkamp's iphone 5 in the days leading up to the shooting and Mr Lahoud confirmed he and his ex-girlfriend had exchanged text messages in the days before they met and up to the shooting.

'She contacted me and we met up for a quick coffee, and that was it.

'We did (exchange text messages), to meet up the previous week. It was just a hello, how are you, and that’s it, and I suppose that led up to meeting me.

'She seemed fine. We didn’t really discuss personal relationships, it was more a friendly thing.

'She didn’t seem unhappy. She always told me that she wouldn’t be with anybody that she felt unhappy with, or she wouldn’t allow herself to be with somebody like that.

'I’m actually glad that we did meet now.  I’m very glad that I did see her.

'She was unbelievable from the beginning. She really captured everything of me and was a great person.

'Reeva had a beautiful loving heart, she gave everything, and was friendly to everyone. She really made you feel good and welcome.

'In a matter of conversing with her for a few seconds you’d feel like you’ve known her for years.
'That was how Reeva was.  Very open and loving and full of fun.'

Asked if she gave any indication that there may have been problems with her relationship with Pistorius, he said they did not discuss him.

'It was just random.  She asked me how business was going, I asked her how her modelling was going, what she’s doing, where she’s at, how things are.

'It was that kind of friendly chat, it wasn’t anything specific we met for. Just a catch up of what’s going on, and how our families are.  That kind of stuff.  You know, nothing specifically intense or anything like that.'

He said if he had a chance to ask Pistorius about the shooting he would say: 'Why? Why did you do it? What happened?

'Other than that I can’t really comment on what’s there, or what has happened, or what I feel.
'I’ll leave that to the justice system, and their findings. Nobody knows, it’s all in their hands, and we just have to wait and see what happens.'

Mr Lahoud said he would be giving police a statement.

He said that during his five years with Miss Steenkamp, he could not remember her locking the toilet door when she went to the bathroom.

Pistorius, who is facing a murder charge after admitting shooting Reeva, insists it was an accident and that he believed his girlfriend was asleep and that an intruder had broken into his home in Pretoria.

He released four bullets through the locked toilet door with the model suffering a wound to her arm, body, finger and head.

Detectives accept his story that he used a cricket bat to break down the toilet door when he realised Reeva might be inside.

His friend and business partner Mike Azzi told the BBC: 'If you ask me do you believe Oscar could do it, I’d have to say no.

'Because I’ve never ever seen that side of him.  But in life there are those moments of madness, where people just are uncontrollable, and I pray to god that that’s not the case with him.'

Patrick Roux, the security chief at the Silver Woods estate where Pistorius lived, said :'I think we’ve got as good as a security as any other estate in at least the heart of Pretoria region.'

He said there had been no crime on the estate since a robbery took place in November 2011.

Pistorius is said to be selling his racehorses, cars and property to help finance the legal battle to prove his innocence.

His case is due to resume on June 4 and he has been released on bail.

In court papers, lawyers for the double-amputee athlete argued against the requirement that he surrender all passports and travel documents, and refrain from applying for such documents pending the end of his case.

Officials will visit Pistorius at his uncle's home at least four times a month, according to James Smalberger, chief deputy commissioner of the department of correctional services.

He said: 'He's not under house arrest, but his movements need to be known to us so that we don't pitch there and he's not there.

'We agree on 'free time' normally during the course of the day, and in the evening we expect him to be home.'

The appeal against the bail conditions also objected to the requirement that Pistorius refrain from using alcohol or any banned substance, even though he had no intention of doing so.

'The mere use of any substance with alcohol in it will give rise to a transgression of the wide condition imposed,' the appeal said.

In addition, the runner should be allowed access to the property at Silverwoods Country Estate where he shot Steenkamp, once the state completes its investigations there within a 'reasonable time limit,' according to Pistorius' legal camp.

'A blanket restriction on speaking to residents is unfair' and infringes on Pistorius' rights to consult people on the estate to prepare for his trial, the appeal said.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair had set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to turn in any guns he owns, and cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission.
