'Cheating husband battered his wife before concocting a "cock and bull" story with his mistress' that he was the abuse victim

A former probation worker smashed his estranged wife's head into a cabinet during a row - then persuaded his alleged mistress to claim it was he who had been attacked.
Cheating husband Muhammed Khalil, 38, lashed out at his wife Bilkis Parveen, 33, when she refused to let him take their two young children away from the family home, a court heard.
He then tried to cover up what he had done by concocting a 'cock and bull' story with Anarkali Habib, 34, who told detectives she witnessed Ms Parveen attacking Khalil while driving past their house in Birmingham.

Habib, from York, told detectives she had handed her number to Khalil after supposedly witnessing him being attacked by his spouse. But it later emerged the number matched one Ms Parveen - who told the court Habib and her estranged husband were lovers - had found stored in Khalil's mobile months earlier.

Khalil, a former probation service information officer, has now been warned a jail sentence is 'extremely likely' after he was convicted of causing actual bodily harm following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

Prosecutor Graeme Simpson told the court Khalil flew into a rage at the house in Ingestre Road as he tried to take his two children, aged two and four, away from his wife on October 31 last year.
He said Khalil swore at Ms Parveen before repeatedly slapping her and then violently ramming her head into a cabinet in the hallway.
Four months before Khalil had walked out on his wife and two children.
Mr Simpson said that out of the blue Khalil turned up again, and initially his wife had agreed to take him back.

However soon afterwards he left again, before returning to demand he be allowed to take the children with him, fuelling the argument that ended in violence.
Ms Parveen told the court she had found out her husband had been seeing another woman after finding Habib's number stored on his mobile phone.
'I had found out that he had been having an affair and had forgiven him,' she said.
'He came back for four days and then left again. He turned up again and said he wanted to take the kids.'
Mr Simpson told the jury that Khalil returned the following day and forced his way into the home: 'He swore at her and slapped her across the face three or four times before pushing her against furniture in the hallway, where she received a nasty cut above her eye.'
The court heard Ms Parveen was questioned after the incident as her husband was claiming she had attacked him, and had even provided an independent witness.
Mr Simpson said: 'In interview Mr Khalil initially told police that he did not know the woman [Habib] and had never met her.
'He told them her number was scribbled down on a piece of paper amongst his belongings.
'When officers told him later that they had been provided with the same mobile telephone number by his wife, who had been told about a witness from York, he admitted concocting the cock and bull story.'
In fact Habib had not been in the area at all, the court heard.
Khalil denied that he had been having a relationship with Anarkali Habib and denied attacking his wife throughout the two-day trial.
When questioned about the relationship by Mr Simpson he told the court she was a close friend.
Judge Simon Drew QC said: 'All sentencing options are open to me and custody is extremely likely in cases involving perverting the course of justice and domestic violence.'
Khalil, who is on bail, is due to be sentenced on May 14.
Khalil and Habib had previously admitted one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Habib, from York, was handed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, in December 2012.
