Stephen Colbert reveals he was CUT from Barack Obama's 60th birthday bash after ex-president's 500 person guestlist was condemned for setting a bad example - but late night host says he went to Martha's Vineyard anyway

Comedian Stephen Colbert revealed Monday night that he was disinvited from Barack Obama's 60th birthday party at Martha's Vineyard, dispelling reports from multiple media outlets that placed him at the event.

Colbert was one of many that the former president cut after receiving backlash for planning the 500-person event as the Delta variant surges and breakthrough cases in vaccinated people continues to spike.

The late night host clarified, however, that he still went to Martha's Vineyard with his wife Evelyn, and jokingly shared exclusive DailyMail.com photos of them at the island's airport.

Colbert explained the situation on the latest episode of his show and said of the event, 'Everybody who's anybody was gonna be there, including yours truly. But given the whole pandemic thing and the Delta variant, a celebrity mosh pit was maybe not the wisest choice so Obama decided to scale back the guest list for his party.'

He spoke to dispel media reports, including one in The New York Times, which released the list of celebrities that had been cut - but said that Colbert was still going.

'I know what you're thinking, 'So Steve, what was the party like?' I don't know. I didn't f*****g go. In the massively scaling back, I got massively scaled.'

He joked, 'The news that I didn't go might be news to some people in the news.' Ahead of the party, The Boston Herald misreported that Colbert and his wife Evelyn were not only going, but own property there, Colbert said.

He then clarified what transpired and said, 'We were invited, honored to be invited obviously . . . we booked a flight, got a hotel, then five days before the party got a voicemail saying they were scaling back . . . wondered if we could still go to Martha's Vineyard and since it was all non-refundable, I said yes we can.'

He revealed an exclusive photo taken of him at the airport by DailyMail.com and said, 'I guess that's why the press thought I was still invited because Daily Mail spotted me at the airport in all of my celebrity glamour.'

He joked, 'I understand why they printed those because look at those legs. C'mon baby! We know that sex sells.'

Colbert concluded the discussion by alluding to his own 60th birthday guest list and said, 'By the way Mr. Former President, my own 60th birthday is coming up in three years. And you sir are not . . . gonna want to miss it! Please come, I'd be so honored if you came! I'd scale me back to make room for you! And Michelle, obviously. You're lovely people, happy birthday sir!'

Obama's party was meant to be a huge soiree for the former president to ring in his 60s, but instead was scaled back to only include close friends and family, Obama's spokesperson said last week in a statement obtained by DailyMail.com.

However, one staff member told DailyMail.com that 300-400 people were in attendance. The party was held in a giant tent at Obama's 7,000-square-foot mansion in the Edgarton section of Martha's Vineyard. It began around sunset and lasted until the small hours of the morning.

But with the coronavirus still a concern, the event drew some raised eyebrows after the host's claim it had been 'scaled back' from a guest list of 500.

An Uber driver told DailyMail.com that he drove one couple to the party who were turned away by Secret Service because they were cut from the final guest list.

He picked them up early Saturday evening from Winnetu Oceanside Resort, where Obama attended a pre-game party the previous night.

'They were dressed to the nines. He was wearing a black suit and tie; she was wearing a luxurious evening gown,' the driver said.

'They were on the original list but not on the reduced list.'

The couple, who'd been invited through a high-level political connection, got past a first checkpoint after presenting their original invite, then were blocked by the second set of guards.

'They thought they were all set when they got past the first point,' the driver said.

'Then the second set of guards asked again for their credentials. They were embarrassed. They were looking forward to the party. It was a big disappointment. But they understood the security protocol.'

Republicans argued that the party should have been even more reduced in size.

'It's hypocrisy at its finest and shows they don't believe what they are saying,' said Republican Party consultant Ryan James Girdusky, speaking to the New York Post.

'The liberal elites are laughing at us, attempting to sell this as a 'scaled-back party,' ' said GOP chairwoman and upstate New York Rep. Elise Stefanik.

'Rules for thee and not for me.'

The 'trimmed down' guest list of 'close family and friends' reads more like the attendees of a Hollywood awards show.

On Friday, DailyMail.com revealed the true scale of the party that the former president had tried to pass off as an 'intimate family affair'.

Our exclusive aerial shots showed a marquee far bigger than his waterfront mansion complete with Sperry tents, a raised stage and sprung dance floor with a set-up that has taken days.

'His close friends apparently include his golfing buddies, politicians, celebrities,' one local businessman told the Daily Mail.

'Those people are here on the island and I doubt he'll be turning them all away.

'He wants people to think this is going to be small and intimate, but I don't think we have the same definition of intimate.'

Alan Dershowitz, president Trump's first impeachment lawyer and former Martha's Vineyard resident, said: 'People didn't want to disrespect him or throw ice on the party but everybody I spoke to was upset that 700 people would be congregating under a tent.

'There was a lot of upset about that and a lot of people on the Vineyard are happy he scaled it back. Everyone but Larry David because he got dissed.'

On Saturday DailyMail.com learned that a Temporary Flight Restriction had been put in place over the Obama's mansion with the secret service threatening to make it permanent.

Restrictions on flying drones anywhere near the property were also bolstered earlier in the week.

Martha's Vineyard does not qualify as an area of 'high' or 'substantial' risk, but Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has recommended that even vaccinated people wear face masks.

'If you have a serious health condition or risk of developing a severe illness from COVID, you should take extreme precautions,' the governor announced last week.

'If you have a close friend or family members who have a serious risk of developing a severe disease or illness from COVID, you should take extra precautions.'
