How young men are one of the biggest drivers of Sydney's virus disaster as illegal beach parties fuel new cases and man with Covid is hunted by police after 'refusing to isolate'

Young men determined to continue gathering after dark during Sydney's hard lockdown have found themselves facing large fines and arrest warrants, including a 27-year-old who tested positive to Covid and allegedly refused to isolate.

There were two parties held at Sydney's eastern beaches this week with the police bomb squad and a chopper called in to apprehend a group of teenagers who tried to run away at North Bondi, with one boy allegedly found in possession of cannabis and ketamine.

This comes after recognition was conveyed at the highest levels that young men across the city are refusing to comply with lockdown laws and are at least partly responsible for the tougher restrictions the city is facing.

On Friday NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller singled out young men in hotspot areas as the main reason for the extended police crackdown, which included the city's first curfew from 5am to 9pm.

'Why the curfew now? Because from the health advice and police on the ground, younger men in those areas of concern are being very difficult to manage,' Mr Fuller said.

On Saturday it was confirmed that up to 60 mainly young men under 30 tested positive to Covid after hosting a party at Maroubra beach less than 10 kilometres away a week ago.

It's believed the men had travelled from Sydney's south-west and western suburbs under stricter public health orders.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said 'at least 60 people' were present at the party, which has become the state's latest super-spreader event.

'We have had an unfortunate event where we have 16 people who attended a gathering in Maroubra ... have now returned a positive Covid-19 result and a number of their contacts have also tested positive,' said Dr Maryanne Gale from NSW Health.

She asked residents of Maroubra, Malabar and the Matraville to come forward for testing and isolate 'should you have even the mildest of symptoms'.

Ms Gale also pleaded for residents to 'please not have parties' and urged people to get vaccinated.

'Please follow the public health orders for yourselves, your family members and your community,' she said.

Police are also searching for a missing man who is suspected to be Covid positive.

Anthony Karam, 27, allegedly 'failed to isolate as directed by the Public Health Order'.

Police say they have tried to find Mr Karam, who is from Bankstown, multiple times since his positive Covid test to no avail and are now seeking help from the wider community.

A warrant has been issued for Mr Karam's arrest. He was last seen at an address at Wentworth Point wearing a black tracksuit and maroon dressing gown.

'There was a gathering in Maroubra, and 11 people attending that gathering have tested positive,' a clearly frustrated Dr Chant said.

'I understand why people are tired and fatigued. But we just cannot have that occurring, where we end up with a further escalation of cases associated with events that are not permitted at this time.'

On the same day singer Guy Sebastian said that his suburb of Maroubra needed to introduce curfews after a 'party in the area resulted in new Covid cases'.

'I live in the Maroubra area,' the 39-year-old tweeted to his 367,000 followers.

'If people were inconsiderate enough to have a party that resulted in 11 +ive cases then I'll cop the consequences for their actions,' he continued.

'If people out west have curfews then we shouldn't be any different. Our community do not think we are above anyone.'
