A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after three people were killed in a horror crash.

Police were called to the scene of the four-vehicle collision on the A303 near Andover, Hampshire, at 8.40am on Wednesday.  

Sadly, three people, all from separate vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Those who died in the smash were a woman in her 20s from Portsmouth, Hants, a woman in her 50s from Southampton, Hants, and a man in his 30s, also from Southampton.

A HGV driver, 38, has been arrested suspicion of driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs and causing death by dangerous driving after a four-vehicle collision on the A303 killed three people

Emergency services said the vehicles involved were a Vauxhall Astra, a Mercedes food delivery van, a HGV and a DAF recovery truck. 

The A303 was closed for 21 hours following the crash and the surrounding area was gridlocked.  

Hampshire Constabulary today confirmed the HGV driver, a 38-year-old man from Donnington, Shropshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs and causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police are now searching for the driver of a small white car with a black roof who may have witnessed the crash.

Senior Investigating officer DC Cate Paling said: 'We are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments leading up to it, particularly anyone with dash cam footage.

'In the immediate moments after the collision, a small white car with a black roof passed the scene and we believe they may be an important witness who we wish to speak with.
