COVID deaths, cases and hospitalizations surge: CDC singles out Hawaii, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming for the startling number of new patients
The seven-day average for COVID deaths has surged by 11 per cent in a week, while the number of cases and hospitalizations are also up, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC's weekly update showed the daily average cases increased to 142,006 in the week to Friday, up 2.8 per cent on the week before, amid the continued alarming rise of the Delta variant. The average cases is 1,117.9 per cent higher than the lowest value observed on June 18, 2021.
The seven-day moving average for coronavirus deaths increased 11 per cent from 779 to 864 on Friday, according to the CDC. That average was 354.5 per cent higher than July 10 - when the seven-day average for daily deaths hit a low of 190.
On Sunday alone, the CDC reported 176,742 new COVID cases and 1,329 new deaths in the United States.
In its weekly COVID-19 tracking report, the CDC noted that the average number of new COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals daily are at their highest levels for all age groups under 50 years old since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The CDC revealed that the seven-day average for new daily hospitalizations shot up 5.7 per cent from 11,637 to 12,297.
The CDC particularly called out the states of Hawaii, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming for the startling number of new patients, with all five states showing the largest new admissions of patients since the start of the pandemic.

It came as portable morgues have been sent to 14 hospital systems in Central Florida as hospitals and crematoriums hit capacity.
The state's health department reported 1,727 new deaths in its weekly report published Friday. The latest deaths brought the seven-day daily average for the past week from 212 to 247.
Meanwhile, hospitals in the wider United States have become overwhelmed with COVID patients.
Oregon's hospitalization rates and availability appear to be the most dire of the states referenced by the CDC, according to a DailyMail.com analysis of the data.
The Oregon Health Authority reported on Friday that the state recorded 20 new deaths, raising the state's total death toll to 3,115.
There were 3,207 new cases reported in Oregon on Friday, a record high for the state, bringing the state's total to 268,401.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Health Authority said that only 6 per cent of the state's total ICU beds are available. There are just 40 ICU beds free of a total of 663, while 308 of those beds are taken by COVID-19 patients.
The state has a total of 4,279 hospital beds and 1,098 of them are taken by patients with COVID-19, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
Oregon has administered a total of 2,789,390 first and second doses of Pfizer Comirnaty, 1,837,163 first and second doses of Moderna and 197,070 single doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines.
Hawaii has vaccinated 62.6 per cent of its total population, administering a total of 1,848,431 vaccines so far, according to state health data.
The Health Department in Hawaii noted that the state has counted an average of 863 new cases per day for the week of August 21 to August 27. About 8.1 per cent of all tests have come back positive.

The CDC notes that there have been 57,509 cases in Hawaii since the start of the pandemic. The state has counted a total of 551 deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, with 19 new deaths reported in the last week.
Meanwhile, the Kentucky Department for Public Health has counted a total of 562,623 infections and 7,685 deaths since the start of the pandemic, as of Friday.
Kentucky reported that there were 18 new deaths on Friday and 4,815 new cases, with 1,529 of those cases being children aged 18 years old and younger.
There are currently 2,129 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Kentucky with 592 in Intensive Care Units. Of those, 349 people are on ventilators. The state reported that about 70 per cent of its 1,859 ICU beds are occupied.
The state's testing positivity rate currently sits at 13.33 per cent.

Data from the Wyoming Department of Health from Thursday shows that the state had 178 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. That number is down just 28 per cent from the beak hospitalization rate of 247 on November 30.
State data shows that Wyoming has a total of 136 designated ICU beds with 62 of them open, as of Thursday.
Wyoming has had a total of 60,684 laboratory confirmed coronavirus cases with an additional 12,783 probable cases - and 835 deaths, according to state data.
In Wyoming, twentysomethings have far outpaced every other demographic for COVID-19 infections with 12,450 infections total among people in their 20s.
The demographic for people in their 30s came in second, with a total of 9,822 infections, and people under the age of 18 came in third place with 8,832 infections.
There have been just 1,989 cases among people aged 80 and older, while there have been 3,569 cases among people in their 70s and 6,476 among people in their 60s, state data shows. There were 7,579 cases among people in their 50s and 8,683 among people in their 40s.
Washington has vaccinated about 72.4 per cent of its eligible population over the age of 12.
There have been a total of 30,483 hospitalizations in the state, which currently has 31.4 per cent of its ICU beds occupied with COVID-19 patients.
There have been a total of 495,528 confirmed cases in Washington, with an additional 55,460 possible cases, and 6,507 deaths.
In Florida, portable morgues have been sent to 14 hospital systems.
The Central Florida Disaster Medical Coalition said each hospital system will be sent different amounts of portable morgues depending on the size of the facility.
Three will go to Advent Health and Orlando Health while only one will be sent to Orlando Health, Leesburg, HCA-East Florida, HCA-North Florida, Steward, Cleveland Clinic and Health First.

'Fifty five per cent of those in the ICUs, or intensive care units, have the disease,' Demings reported
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings also confirmed hospital morgues are at capacity and announced a seven-day extension of the state of emergency order at the 150th COVID update since March of last year.
During a COVID-19 update on Thursday Demings said: 'The Florida Hospital Association is reporting over 16,700 people are currently hospitalized in the state of Florida. The Hospital Association also reports that this number is nearly two thirds higher than the previous peak of hospitalizations in July of 2020.
Despite the inflated number of infections and hospitalizations Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued executive orders banning mask mandates and vaccine passports for certain businesses.
Only 53.8 per cent of Florida's population is fully vaccinated.
Kimberly Mitchell, the owner of Mitchell's Funeral Home - a crematorium in Orlando - told WKMG: 'COVID has never gone away. As you can see the hospitals are starting to run out of room.'
Mitchell also said that the funeral home is running out of room in the refrigerators used to store dead bodies.
'It is still important that we pull together, get vaccinated and mask up to get a handle on the surge that we're presently experiencing,' Demings said.
'There are now more than 192,000 coronavirus cases reported in Orange County... But for the first time in quite a while now, our new cases are under 1,000 in one day,' he added.
