Three gunman open fire in Chicago street injuring seven people including a one-month-old baby shot in the head as the violence-ridden city is hit by its 26th mass shooting this year

A shooting in Chicago wounded seven people, including an infant who was struck in the head, authorities say in what was at least the 26th mass shooting in Chicago this year.

All told, at least four were killed and 28 people were injured in shootings around the city on Thursday ahead of what could be a dangerous holiday weekend.

The shooting occurred about 8:15pm Thursday on the city's South Side, police said.

Three males got out of a black SUV and began shooting in several directions, striking the seven people, then got back in the vehicle and fled, police said.

The infant remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford and police said. The baby is about a month old.

The child was strapped into a car seat when she was shot, police spokesman Tom Ahern said.

On Friday morning, the baby's uncle, Charles McKenzie, told the Chicago Sun-Times that the baby was 'doing pretty good.'

The baby did require surgery, but she was able to breathe on her own after it was over.

McKenzie added that the bullet didn't pierce the baby's skull, but that her car seat was riddled with bullet holes.

'They said your niece was shot, I’m like my niece? I couldn't believe it,' McKenzie said of learning about the shooting.

'It’s hurtful, it’s painful,' McKenzie continued. 'To know that I’m out here serving and protecting the community and fighting against gun violence every day and it ends up my people that’s afflicted from this gun violence.'

The violence prevention activist learned of the mass shooting from members of the community.

A store manager near the shooting said the family of the infant were 'just regular everyday people' who were 'hanging out near their car parked outside' at the time of the shooting.

The store manager claimed that the baby's father was also shot in the incident.

'All he’s trying to do is take care of his family. He doesn't do anything stupid or anything like that,' the manager said of the father. 'Unfortunately these guys came out of nowhere.

'This area has been like this forever. This is like an ongoing thing that's been going on for years.'

An 8-year-old girl was also shot in her Roseland home, with two women on the porch of the home shot as well. One has died.

Last Sunday, two separate mass shootings in less than two hours in Chicago have left two women dead and at least 15 others injured.

The shootings capped off another bloody weekend in Chicago as shooting incidents and violent crime surge into the summer. From Friday to Sunday, at least 62 people were injured in Chicago shootings and two have died.

Chicago has seen a number of mass shootings and mass killings in recent weeks. Coupled with others around the country in June, shootings stoked concerns about a spike in U.S. gun violence heading into the summer, as coronavirus restrictions ease and more people are free to socialize.

Statistics released Thursday by Chicago police show fewer killings but more shootings in the city so far this year than the same period a year ago.

Through Thursday, there have been 336 homicides in Chicago this year, compared to 334 in 2020, according to an analysis by the Chicago Sun-Times.

There were 252 at the same point in 2019, however, making a 33 percent increase in homicides from two years ago.

There have also been 1,916 shootings in Chicago through June, an increase of about 12 percent from 2020 and 55 percent from 2019.

A Chicago Sun-Times analysis shows that there have been at least 24 shootings this year that have injured at least four people.

Ahead of the holiday weekend, police officers are switching to 12-hour shifts without days off.

There will also be an undisclosed number of police officers sent to the lakefront and entertainment venues around the city.
