Just 38% of Americans approve of Biden's handling of crime, 55% want MORE funding for the police and 59% sees surge in violence across the country as 'extremely serious', new poll shows

Americans have given President Joe Biden a dismal rating on his handling of crime amid a surge in violence across the country, a new poll has found.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll released on Friday morning shows just 38 per cent of the public approve of how he is dealing with the spike in crime and 48 percent disapprove.

Murder rates in major cities have risen by 30 percent in the last year and shootings have spiked by 8 percent.

A 59 percent majority of Americans believe crime is an 'extremely' or 'very' serious problem in the U.S., an increase from 51 percent in a Gallup poll released last fall, which was the highest rate since 2007.

The poll found 55 percent of Americans say increasing funding for law enforcement would reduce violent crime.

It comes just a week after Biden announced his bid to crackdown on crime by targeting gun dealers.

His administration has insisted that guns are to blame for the surge in crime, even though there has been a spike in violence in major cities in general.

Biden's plan would also allow communities to use coronavirus relief funds to hire police officers or engage in other bids to crack down on crime.

But his proposals to focus on dealers rather than criminals and his mockery for gun advocates brought a rapid backlash from Republicans who accused him of bowing to his parties radical wing.

He promised 'zero tolerance' for dealers who break the rules but also mocked Americans who believe they need firearms to protect their rights from the government.

'If you want to think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons,' he said.

He delivered his message from the White House against a surge in violence around the country

'Crime historically rises during the summer,' said Biden.

'And as we emerge from this pandemic... the country opening back up again... the traditional summer spike may be more pronounced than it usually would be.'

Before delivering his speech he met with state leaders, mayors, a police chief and other experts to discuss the best way to make the country safer.

It left him with a delicate balancing act, straddling calls from within his own party to 'defund the police' while heading off political critics on the right ready to accuse him of being soft on crime.

But he did not shy from tackling the gun lobby directly.

Asked about potential solutions to the crime problem, 75 per cent said increased funding for economic opportunities; 65 per cent said more social workers would help the situation. A narrower majority, 55 per cent, said increased funding for police – a move backed by 76 per cent of Republicans but only 45 per cent of Democrats.

A total of 46 per cent backed stricter gun laws – an option Biden has called for repeatedly. The view is shared by 81 per cent of Democrats but just 13 per cent of Republicans, who have been able to stop gun control measures for years in Congress.
