Millionaire hair care guru who caught the Delta strain from her daughter reveals the frightening symptoms her girl suffered - as expert warns Sydney's lockdown could go on for WEEKS

A hair care guru who caught Covid-19 from her teenage daughter has revealed the horrible symptoms they both endured and warned Australians against being complacent about the highly infectious Indian Delta variant.

Bondi-based Jose Bryce Smith, who made her name in Australia when she established Original & Mineral 21 years ago, is slowly recovering after being floored by the variant that has thrown Sydney into lockdown.

Speaking on a Facebook video uploaded by the Australian Hairdressing Council this week, Bryce Smith recalled how her 14-year-old daughter became infected during a quick-fire chain of events that saw the virus spread to several members of their extended family.

'My daughter got Covid from one of her second cousins,' she said.

'She went round to their house about an hour before the lockdown was announced and he the passed it on.

'It's actually unbelievable how quickly it spread within the family.

'He got it himself after attending a funeral. It then quickly spread between the family...once it gets into a household, pretty much everyone gets it.

'Five days later my daughter got a positive test and then started feeling very lethargic...she couldn't taste any food and spent four days in bed with a fever.

'She was very cold and sweating...as well as having a sore throat and a very bad cough.

'She also thought she was freezing, but she was absolutely boiling.'

Days later, it was Jose's turn to be ill.

'I then got it four days after Jasmine did, so it can take a while to come on,' she said.

'I felt dreadful and after getting a test, it was positive. Very quickly my throat was aching and my glands were swollen. I was also blocked up in my nose and had bad body aches.'

Bryce Smith added having coronavirus is  'definitely not pleasant'.

'I am a very fit person, but when deciding to go upstairs or come downstairs, I needed to think about it because you are exhausted when you get to the other end,' she said.

Bryce Smith believed she would be protected while she was looking after her ill daughter because she was wearing a mask, gloves and was taking vitamin C.

'I thought... I won't get it. But yes, I did.'

It's unknown if Bryce Smith is vaccinated against Covid, but she said she wasn't taking any risks when it came to protecting herself against the virus.

The development comes as Professor Angela Webster, an epidemiologist at Sydney University, stated she doesn't expect the lockdown to end on July 16 in NSW.

'We have a lot of people in isolation now from all of the mounting exposure venues,' she told the ABC.

'I think we are looking at several more weeks of lockdown if we are going to get this outbreak under control.

'The way out of this is under public health measures and social distancing to reduce contact and spread, but the real way out is vaccination.'

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian stated the lockdown will need to be extended unless there is a significant turnaround in Sydney's current Covid outbreak.

The warning comes after NSW recorded 44 new locally acquired cases on Friday — the highest number since the latest outbreak began on June 16.

What concerned the leader of NSW most was the fact that 27 cases had been out in the community for some or all of their infectious period.

'It tells us that in the next few days … both the case numbers and unfortunately the number of people who may be exposed, or have been exposed, in the community is going to go up,' she said.

'This is the opposite of where we need or want the numbers to trend.'

From 5pm on Friday, outdoor public gatherings were limited to two people and residents must stay in their LGA or within 10km of their home for exercise and outdoor recreation.

Browsing in shops is now banned, and only one person per household can leave the home to shop each day for essential items.

Ms Berejiklian acknowledged the new rules were tough, but stressed staying at home is integral to containing the virus.

'We have to quash the community transmission because if we don't, we will see thousands and thousands of people in hospital, and thousands of people, potentially, dying,' she said.

'Until we get vaccination rates higher, we do not have the luxury of considering living with this virus. We don't have that as an option.'
