REVEALED: Antifa gunman, 48, killed by police was pictured with his son, 17, brandishing a baseball bat outside of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler's condo a day before he shot a Trump supporter

An Oregon man who declared himself '100% Antifa' was pictured at a protest in Portland with his 17-year-old son the night before he shot dead a Trump supporter.  

Michael Reinoehl, 48, was seen standing outside of Mayor Ted Wheeler's residence on August 28 with his teenage son, who was wielding a baseball bat. 

The following night, Reinoehl fatally shot Aaron 'Jay' Danielson, 39, a Trump loyalist and a supporter of the right-wing conservative group Patriot Prayer.

Less than two months before the shooting, Reinoehl was also pictured being detained at another Portland protest for illegal possession of a gun - but he was let go.  

According to 'Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy', a new book by journalist Andy Ngo, Reinoehl was detained and cited for possessing an illegal and loaded gun in a public place, resisting arrest and interfering with police on July 5.

At this time, Portland was in its second month of Black Lives Matter protests that were targeting the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse.

Reinoehl was photographed being detained by police with a pistol on the ground beside him.

Yet the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office dropped all charges against him.

According to Ngo, who recently published an excerpt of his book in the New York Post, Reinoehl was released after he claimed to be injured.  

Reinoehl was killed by US Marshals in Washington State on September 3, 2020, after they claimed he opened fire on them when they attempted to make an arrest.  

A warrant was out for Reinoehl’s arrest after surveillance footage appeared to show him lying in wait for his victim Danielson before following him into the street and opening fire.  

The shooting occurred after a day of tense clashes between Trump supporters and far-left groups in Portland, with activists seen trying to block a vehicles in a Trump caravan and throwing objects at them,. 

Trump supporters sprayed mace in return and fired a paintball gun from vehicles.

Yet the tension had mostly died down by 8.30pm when the surveillance footage picked up Reinoehl's attack.

The court documents filed with his arrest warrant reveal startling information, including the text messages Reinoehl sent to his own son offering to trade marijuana for a handgun weeks before the murder.

In the warrant affidavit, Portland Police Detective Rico Beniga describes the events leading up to the shooting, based on witness statements, previously released bystander video, and surveillance video from a nearby parking garage.

At first, Reinoehl was walking with a white female southbound on SW 3rd Avenue, and both could be seen staring eastbound down perpendicular Adler Street as they crossed the intersection.

After Reinoehl and the woman cross the intersection, the white female pauses and stands against a building as Reinoehl continues walking.

Then, Danielson and Danielson's friend Chandler Pappas are seen turning a corner behind them from Adler Street. Reinoehl is seen glancing behind him and reaching for his waistband.

Reinoehl then ducks into the entrance of a parking garage 'and reaches toward his left front waist area,' the affidavit states.

'Reinoehl conceals himself, waits, and watches as Danielson and Pappas continue walking by. Danielson and Pappas do not appear to interact or communicate with anyone and continue southbound on SW 3rd Avenue,' it continues.

Beniga notes that Danielson appears to be carrying a can of bear mace in one hand, and a telescoping baton in the other.

After the two men, who are wearing hats of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer, walk past, Reinoehl emerges from the parking garage and appears to be reaching for his waistband.

Danielson and Pappas turn right to cross SW 3rd Avenue, and Reinoehl and another unidentified man, described as Subject #2 in the affidavit, together follow them, walking out of the security camera's field of view.

What happened next was captured in the bystander video and described by Pappas in police and media interviews.

Pappas told Fox News that two men approached him and Danielson from behind, saying words to the effect of 'we got a couple right here' and someone shouting, 'pull it out,' apparently in reference to a gun.

He said that he and Danielson turned around, and that two shots were fired almost immediately.

Witnesses told police that Danielson began to spray the bear mace at the shooter immediately before he was shot.

Beniga wrote that an autopsy found that Danielson had been shot in the chest from the front. The bear mace can that he was carrying had damage consisted with a bullet impact, the detective said.

Police responded to the scene less than a minute after the shooting, bystander video shows. The affidavit states that police found a 9mm Glock Model 17 on Danielson's body, holstered in the waist area.

The gun's 19-round magazine was full, and there was a bullet in the chamber. Detectives concluded that it could not have been fired during the encounter.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, it was falsely claimed online by Antifa activists - short for 'anti-fascists' and an umbrella term for far-left-leaning militant groups – that the victim was a Black Lives Matter protester.

'The far-right have been building up to this for the last three weeks. The Portland Police encouraged this escalation,' tweeted Rose City Antifa.

'As we process our trauma over this tragic turn of events, let's remember the importance of standing together as a community in opposition to fascist violence,' added another Antifa group, Popular Mobilization.

Yet within a few hours, images began to emerge of Danielson's body lying on the ground after the shooting, showing his Thin Blue Line patch on his clothing and hat bearing the insignia of the Patriot Prayer group.

Ngo claims in his book that the mood then turned celebratory in Portland with one woman on a bullhorn yelling: 'I just got word the person who died was a Patriot Prayer person — he was a f**king Nazi! Our community held its own and took out the trash. I am not going to shed any tears over a Nazi.'

Pappas and Danielson had participated in the pro-Trump rally, and Pappas said they were returning home when Danielson was killed.

In an interview aired on VICE the day he died, Reinoehl said he had acted to protect 'a friend of mine of color' who Reinoehl claimed would have been killed had he not fired.

'I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that,' said Reinoehl.

He also said that he would not turn himself in as he believed the police aligned with right-wingers.

According to investigators, however, the purported friend denied knowing Reinoehl, and said he did not witness the shooting and had no idea it would happen, OPB reported.

The purported friend is believed to be the man seen in surveillance footage of the shooting, identified in Reinoehl's arrest warrant as 'Subject #2'.

Prosecutors in Portland declined to indict him for aiding or abetting the killing of Danielson, according to court records reported by OPB.

Before his death, Reinoehl's social media accounts had laid bare his antifa loyalty.

As well as claiming he was '100 percent antifa', he wrote long posts about the need for a violent revolution and an armed struggle.

Reinoehl was killed on September 3 in Tanglewilde, a small community outside of Lacey about 55 miles southwest of Seattle. He had fled from Portland after Danielson's shooting

The divorced father of two also claimed that he was in the Army, yet Ngo said he had confirmed they had no record of him.

Instead, Ngo reports that had odd jobs and was a former professional skateboarder.

As for previous arrests, Reinoehl's criminal history showed he had a number of driving related offenses in the state. 

This included an incident in June last year, where he and his teenage son were stopped for racing in separate vehicles.

State police claimed he had his 11-year-old daughter in the passenger seat and as well as prescription drugs, marijuana and an illegally possessed loaded Glock pistol.

He failed to appear in court and had a warrant for his arrest but even when he was detained again in the protests in July, he was not kept in custody.

Questions surrounded Reinoehl's death and whether or not he had first shot at police before they opened fire.

Yet investigators say that Reinoehl had his hand on a .380 caliber pistol in his right front pocket, and that an AR-15-style .22-caliber rifle was found in the car, along with a .380-caliber shell casing.

Investigators still don't know, and may never know for certain, whether Reinoehl opened fire before he was shot by police.
