Victoria records just one new case of coronavirus after considering closing its border to international arrivals to stop the threat of a 'mutant' UK strain

Victoria has recorded just one new locally acquired case of coronavirus.

There were also two Covid-19 infections reported in hotel quarantine on Wednesday, after 37,509 tests were conducted.

Victoria's current coronavirus cluster is linked to a Black Rock restaurant in bayside Melbourne, which is connected to an outbreak in NSW.

But Wednesday's infection is being treated as a 'mystery' case - with no known link to another case or a high risk location.

The man in his 30s attended the Boxing Day sales at Chadstone Shopping Centre and day two of the Australia-India cricket Test at the MCG.

Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said health authorities don't believe the man was infectious during his visit to the MCG on December 27.

But people seated in the Great Southern Stand's zone 5 between 12.30pm to 3.30pm have been asked to get tested and self-isolate.

'Anyone who was seated within that zone 5 bubble will be receiving a text message in the next couple of hours, advising them of the situation,' Ms Allan said on Wednesday.

The daily Covid-19 update comes after Police Minister Lisa Neville suggested Australia should consider closing its airports to flights from Britain due to a new virus strain.

'You cannot look at the UK and not be concerned about it,' she said during Victoria's daily coronavirus update on Tuesday.

Australia has so far identified at least eight cases of this particular strain in arrivals from Britain, including three in Perth on Tuesday.

' job is to make sure that our hotel quarantine system is as robust and strong as possible, that this does not get out, whether it's the UK strain or any other strain,' Ms Neville said.

The strain is believed to be up to 70 per cent more infectious than the original.

Another international strain - a South African variant - was detected in a woman who arrived in Queensland on December 22 who went straight into hotel quarantine.

More than 30 countries around the world have recorded cases of the South African or UK coronavirus variants including the US, Lebanon, Singapore, Pakistan, India, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany and Italy.

The World Health Organisation is yet to determine whether the new variants could undermine COVID-19 vaccines being rolled out around the world.

On Tuesday evening, the Department of Health and Human Services identified new potential exposure sites in Melbourne, including a Nike store in South Melbourne, a Culture Kings shop and a Sri Lankan restaurant.

There were three locally acquired cases reported in Victoria on Tuesday - all linked to the Black Rock cluster.
