Terrifying moment a Today show presenter caught up in the anarchy in the US gets TEAR GAS in her eyes as Trump supporters storm the Capitol in DC

An Australian Today show reporter has been caught up in the chaos unfolding in the US, copping tear gas in her eyes outside the Capitol Building.

Chanel Nine journalist Amelia Adams preparing to do a live cross when she was asked by the morning show's hosts if the situation was beginning to calm down.

A long pause ensued before the 38-year-old foreign correspondent said: 'I've just copped a little bit of tear gas in the eyes. It's not calming down at all.'

But the presenter carried on through the broadcast as she continued to squint after being hit by the gas.

'You can see the tear gas billowing out of the door of the Capitol Building as thousands and thousands of supporters continue to chant "Stop the steal US'", she said.

'They want to reclaim the house of Congress.'

Studio host David Campbell gave her 'kudos' for the way she handled the terrifying situation as swarms of angry demonstrators surrounded her.

But his praise quickly turned to concern.

'Amelia, you need to go flush your eyes out with some water,' the Today show host said.

'You are weathering the storm with people interrupting you, yelling at you, people masked and coming at you, and you are still reporting this incredibly well. It is vital what you are doing.'

Chaotic scenes erupted in Washington on Wednesday afternoon after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol building.

The protesters violently clashed with police in a bid to stop Joe Biden's election victory being certified.

Some demonstrators even made it to the floor of the House where they took photos of themselves in the chamber.

Others were seen on video clips uploaded to social media having running battles with law enforcement in the halls of the iconic building as well as outside.

During the unrest a woman was shot in the chest and remains in a critical condition.

It is not clear who shot the woman.

Dozens of police have also reportedly been injured during the conflict.

Law enforcement officials say at least one pipe bomb was found on the grounds as the violence unfolded.

Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and other congressional leaders were all immediately whisked to safety by the Secret Service as the violence broke out.

Lawmakers cowering inside the House Chamber were urged to put on gas masks as tear gas was fired in the rotunda.

Officers at the front door of the chamber had their guns drawn as a protester tried to break down the door.

The National Guard has now been deployed to the US Capitol to quash the unrest.

Amelia Adams is not the only Australian reporter to become the victim of US civil unrest this year.

Just months after two US police officers were placed on administrative leave after an Australian TV reporter and cameraman were beaten at a rally outside the White House.

Seven News reporter Amelia Brace and cameraman Tim Myers were broadcasting live back to Australia in the midst of June’s George Floyd protests when US Park Police in riot gear began aggressively clearing Washington DC's Lafayette Square.

Ms Brace was clubbed with a truncheon and Mr Myers punched and hit with a riot shield.

Brace said they were both hit by rubber bullets prior to the altercation, as police used batons and tear gas to push hundreds of protesters back away from the White House.

Brace shouted, 'We're media!' as officers targeted her and Myers.

'Cameraman Tim Meyers and I are both okay. Pretty bruised, but okay,' Brace later told Channel 7.

'We were at some distance, expecting a crackdown at curfew time... but their surge took everyone by surprise.'
