'The person that filmed this video is a serial Covid party goer - videos such as these being posted on a regular basis.'

Leeds Beckett University said that many students stayed in their halls of residence over Christmas or that the halls are their primary residence and that they have been told to follow government guidelines.

A second video showing hoards of students at another party in Sheffield has also been shared on social media.

The footage which was taken on January 3 shows first year students at the University of Sheffield dancing in a very confined space.

One student who saw the footage said: 'A girl on my Snapchat filming a rave at her Uni during the pandemic. No social distancing, all from different households!

'Uni students still think it's right to act and behave like this. It's wrong and hopefully if exposed it can deter people from doing it more.'

Under new regulations announced as part of the third national lockdown last night university students are being told to stay at home and study remotely.

Universities in England had already planned a staggered return for this term but there will now be even fewer students on campus for the start of the year.

The latest lockdown guidance says university students who are taking practical courses such as medicine or veterinary science should return for face-to-face lessons as planned.

These students will be expected to take two Covid tests or self-isolate for 10 days when they return.

But students on all other courses are being told not to come back to university if possible and to start their term online 'until at least mid-February'.

Since universities went back in September last year there have been dozens of instances of students breaking coronavirus rules in order to hold large gatherings.

A Leeds Beckett University spokesperson said: 'The health and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider community is of the highest priority to us.

'All students have been made aware of their personal and collective responsibility when it comes to safety, social distancing and government guidelines on Covid-19.

'Where concerns are raised with regards to any breaches of the rules we act swiftly to thoroughly investigate and take action as necessary.'

The University of Sheffield has been contacted for comment.
