Student heads for early retirement after winning $20 million Powerball - as he reveals why number 13 is lucky for him

A student from Queensland in his 20s has just become Australia's newest millionaire after winning a $20million Powerball jackpot.

The man, from MacGregor in Brisbane's south, had the only winning entry in Thursday night's Division One draw, which he purchased online.

After receiving a call from The Lott last night, the ecstatic man, who chose to remain anonymous, said he would have to tell his family on Friday morning as they were asleep when he tried to call.

'They'll see all these missed calls from me,' the man said.

The man picked the winning numbers 29, 4, 17, 16, 33, 5 and 9 from the main draw barrel.

He also had to pick one number to be drawn from the Powerball barrel to take home the $20million jackpot - with his lucky number being 13.

He explained he had put off getting a ticket but rushed to purchase one just before the draw closed.

'Every time I've seen the news about a lottery winner, I've thought 'That lucky guy, it's going to be me next time' ... I can't believe it,' he said.

'People give their whole lives to work, but I'm going to put my family and friends first. I'm going to help them and surprise them - some have been through a tough year.'

Four Division Two winners will share a prize pool of nearly half-a-million dollars.

The next Powerball draw is on Christmas eve.
