She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.
A witness who was travelling along the busy road said she saw the woman lying in the road in a pool of blood.
'I saw an older woman lying stiff in the middle of the road with paramedics attending to a head wound,' she said.
'They were patting the back of her head down with white gauze and she was in the casualty position.'
'Standing by her was another woman, younger and with red hair, next to quite an expensive car and another car had pulled to the side of the road as well.'
The witness said it looked like the elderly woman was a pedestrian who had been hit, and she wasn't moving on the road.
'It's a busy intersection and just so heartbreaking to see days before Christmas,' she said.
Commuters are being urged to exercise caution around the area as one of the westbound lanes has closed due to the incident.
