Sexual assault charge against Jacob Blake, 29, is dropped and he pleads guilty to disorderly conduct after being shot seven times by a white officer left him paralyzed in Kenosha

Jacob Blake, the black man who was paralyzed after a white Wisconsin officer shot him seven times in the back, reached a plea deal Friday to settle a sexual assault case pending against him.

Online court records indicated that prosecutors dropped a felony third-degree sexual assault charge and a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge against 29-year-old Blake.

In exchange, Blake pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, and Judge Bruce Schroeder sentenced him to two years of probation.

Blake was initially accused of sexual assault in May, but noncompliance from the woman reportedly led to the dismissal of the sexual assault charge.

'This was an agreement reached partly because the victim in this matter was not responsive to the subpoena to appear in court,' said Zeke Wiedenfeld, Walworth County district attorney, per The Kenosha News.

Blake, who appeared in virtual court via Zoom, told prosecutors that his guilty plea was done simply so he could spend time with family.

'Honestly, your honor, although I pled guilty to this, I don’t consider myself to be guilty,' he said, reports The Kenosha News.

'I pretty much took this opportunity to get to see my children quicker.'

Blake maintained his innocence in the case, his lawyer, Patrick Cafferty, told Boston.com.

Cafferty said that by dropping the sexual assault charge, prosecutors conceded that 'ultimately, the state could not prove it in court.'

'I think this was a fair resolution of these charges,' he said.

Cafferty told Boston.com that the case's results would not interfere with the Department of Justice's investigation into the police-involved shooting.

Prosecutors in Kenosha accused Blake in July of breaking into a woman's home and sexually assaulting her.

Officers tried to arrest him in connection with that case on August 23, but Blake resisted, according to police.

Officer Rusten Sheskey, who is white, ended up shooting him seven times in the back as he tried to duck into his SUV, cellphone video from a neighbor shows.

Sheskey's lawyer contends that he believed Blake was trying to kidnap one of his own children and Blake turned toward him with a knife.

The shooting left Blake paralyzed from the waist down and sparked several nights of protests in Kenosha that turned violent at times.

Prosecutors have charged Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, with fatally shooting two men and wounding a third during one of the demonstrations.

Rittenhouse is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the killing of two protesters: Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber

The teenager had traveled to Kenosha on August 25 from his home in nearby Antioch, Illinois, in a self-appointed role to protect the streets of Kenosha where the police shooting of Jacob Blake had sparked unrest during protests.

According to prosecutors and court documents, Rittenhouse shot and killed 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum after Rosenbaum threw a plastic bag at Rittenhouse, missing him, and tried to wrestle his rifle away.

While trying to get away in the immediate aftermath, Rittenhouse was captured on cellphone video saying 'I just killed somebody.'

Huber was shot dead soon after and a third protester was wounded.
