'You can have it!' Fisherman's priceless reaction as a monster great white shark circles his kayak off the coast of Australia

A fisherman has captured the terrifying moment a monster great white shark circled his kayak off the NSW mid-north coast.

Matthew Smith's encounter with the four-metre beast unfolded about 1.5km off Black Head Beach, north of Tuncurry, last Saturday.

Mr Smith was fishing for snapper on a kayak when the shark approached, leaving him frozen in fear.

'Holy s**t! No! No f**k off!' he screamed in footage of the encounter.

'I just looked next to me and the shark was just gliding past, looking straight at me,' Mr Smith told 9News.

The moment was captured from above by Mr Smith's mate Nick O'Brien, who was shooting from a drone overhead.

Mr O'Brien could see the shark approaching, but had no way of alerting his friend to the incoming danger.

'It was a bit of a shock. I just sort of started worrying, thinking, oh, "hopefully this goes alright",' he said.

The shark circled Mr Smith, before swimming towards the anchor attached to the tail of his kayak, prompting him to thrown it overboard.

'You can have it!' he said in the footage.

Once the anchor disappeared the shark swam away, with Mr Smith's brother rushing over after hearing the commotion.

Mr Smith said the encounter has inspired him to leave the kayak behind for a bigger vessel for his next few fishing adventures.

'The tinny might get wet for the next couple of weeks and the kayak might stay in the shed,' he said.

Seven Australians have been killed in shark attacks this year.

The death toll rose when father-of-two Andrew Sharpe was killed by a shark while surfing at Kelp Beds in Wylie Bay, near Esperance on WA's south coast, on October 9.

Experts believe a La Niña weather event is creating cooler water temperatures that are favoured by great white sharks, which have killed several victims this year, and drawing them closer to shore.

Esperance is a hot spot for shark attacks as Laeticia Brouwer, 17, was also killed by a great white while surfing near the WA town in 2017.

Wildlife ranger Zachary Robba, 23, was then mauled to death by a shark while swimming off the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland in April.

Another great white shark killed surfer Rob Pedretti, 60, at Salt Beach near Kingscliff in far northern NSW in June.

Spearfisher Matthew Tratt, 36, was mauled to death by a suspected great white shark in a 'provoked' attack on Fraser Island in Queensland in July.

Later in July, surfer Mani Hart-Deville, 15, was catching waves when he was killed by a suspected great white shark at Wooli Beach, near Grafton on the NSW North Coast.

Another surfer, Nick Slater, 46, was mauled to death by a suspected great white at Greenmount Beach on the Gold Coast in September.
