Woman plunges 20 metres down a cliff and onto the rocks below while walking in Sydney

A woman has plunged 20 metres off a cliff and hit her head while out walking in Sydney.

The 38-year-old was walking along the cliffs near Washaway Beach in Clontarf in the city's northern beaches on Friday.

The sightseer suddenly plunged 20 metres off the cliff and onto the rocks beneath.

It is believed she suffered head injuries but was still responsive, Nine News reported. 

A rescue team involve firemen, police and paramedics came to the injured woman's aid as they abseiled down the cliff toward her.    

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene.
