A Texas man who is a member of the far-right Boogaloo Bois group has been charged with inciting a riot after he allegedly shot up a Minneapolis police precinct during George Floyd protests.

Ivan Harrison Hunter, 26, was charged by federal prosecutors on Friday for traveling across state lines on May 28 in what authorities have described as a coordinated attack to incite violence.

Prosecutors say video shows Hunter firing 13 rounds from a semiautomatic assault-style rifle on the Minneapolis Third Precinct police station while people believed to be looters were inside.

Hunter, who was wearing a skull mask and tactical gear at the time, also allegedly screamed 'Justice for Floyd'.

He also looted and helped set the building ablaze, according to a criminal complaint.

Hunter, who allegedly made statements on social media describing what he had done in Minneapolis, says he is part of the Boogaloo Bois - an anti-government extremist group.

Prosecutors say Hunter had traveled from Texas to Minneapolis to join in protests in the wake of George Floyd's death on May 25.

The black man's death at the hands of a white police officer sparked widespread protests over racism and police brutality across the city and country.

Prosecutors say that Hunter and other Boogaloo Bois members started to discuss in private Facebook messages their plans to travel to Minneapolis when the unrest first started to unfold.

Two hours after shooting up the police precinct, prosecutors say Hunter messaged another Boogaloo member in California named Steven Carrillo.

'Go for police buildings,' Hunter told Carrillo, according to the complaint.

'I did better lol,' Carrillo replied.

Carrillo was subsequently charged with killing a Federal Protective Services Officer in Oakland, California, that same night.

Police in Austin, Texas stopped a pickup truck on June 3 in which Hunter was a passenger for multiple traffic violations.

Hunter had six loaded magazines for a semiautomatic rifle in a tactical vest he was wearing.

Officers also found multiple firearms in the truck.

Several days after the stop, federal agents learned of Hunters' online affiliation with Carrillo.

They subsequently found Facebook posts in which Hunter had bragged about his involvement in burning down the Minneapolis police precinct.

He wrote: 'I helped the community burn down that police station' and 'I didn't' protest peacefully Dude... Want something to change? Start risking felonies for what is good.'

Hunter was taken into custody without incident by San Antonio police this week and made his initial court appearance on Thursday.

He is the third member of the Boogaloo Bois to be arrested over the violent George Floyd protests in Minneapolis.
