Police swarm riverbanks in Melbourne after a woman's body was found floating in the water

A body has been found floating in a Melbourne river by a passerby, leading to a large number of police swarming the area.

The woman's body was discovered in the Maribyrnong River, in the inner-city, early on Monday morning.

Victoria Police attended the scene in large numbers, but at this stage are not treating it as suspicious.

The grim discovery was made near Van Ness Avenue, which is a popular location for walkers and joggers.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
