New York, New Jersey and Connecticut urge residents NOT to travel between states after uptick in COVID-19 cases as governors say there'll be no quarantine for now because it's impractical

New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are urging residents not to travel between the three states following an uptick in COVID-19 cases across the Northeast.

The governors of all three states, who are all Democrats, have asked residents to avoid unnecessary or non-essential travel in the tri-state area at the time.   

It is in response to New Jersey and Connecticut both reporting spikes in coronavirus cases this month. 

The number of daily cases in New Jersey has surpassed 1,000 at least three times in the last two weeks, which is the highest it has been per day since back in May. 

Cases have also been increasing in neighboring Connecticut.  

With the rising cases, the two states now meet the threshold to be included on the tri-state travel advisory list that both states had jointly agreed on with New York back in June. 

The governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut say they won't attempt to impose quarantines on visitors from the three states. New Jersey and Connecticut have both reported spikes in COVID-19 cases this month and meet the threshold to be included on the tri-state travel advisory list. The list requires travelers from 38 states (above in red) where cases are rising to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival 

New York's Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey's Phil Murphy and Connecticut's Ned Lamont, however, said on Tuesday that they would not attempt to impose quarantines on visitors from neighboring states. 

'The travel advisory was designed to keep our respective states safe, with the understanding that we are a connected region, dependent on each other when it comes to commerce, education, and health care,' the governors said in a joint statement. 

'We're urging all of our residents to avoid unnecessary or non-essential travel between states at this time, but will not subject residents of our states to a quarantine if coming from a neighboring state. 

'New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut have among the lowest infection rates in the country because we have based our approaches to controlling the spread on science and data, and we will continue to do so.' 

New York, an early epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic and home to more COVID-19 deaths than any other state, currently requires travelers from 38 states where cases are rising to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival.

CONNECTICUT: Cases have also been increasing in neighboring Connecticut where the state's positive test rate is currently 1.9 percent

Even thought Connecticut and New Jersey now meet New York's criteria, Governor Andrew Cuomo admitted that implementing such restrictions would be impractical. 

He said he would announce new guidance on Wednesday. 

'There's no practical way to quarantine New York from New Jersey and Connecticut,' Cuomo said.

'There are just too many interchanges, there are too many interconnections, there are too many people who live in one place and work in the other.'

He noted the many people living in New Jersey and Connecticut who commute to jobs in New York City.

'It would have a disastrous effect on the economy.' 

The travel advisory was put in place back in June in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19 as infections surged across the Sunbelt states.

It requires travelers from states on the list to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in the states.  

States are added to the advisory if they average 10 or more new cases per day per 100,000 residents or its positive test rate is more than 10 percent. 

New Jersey's positive test rate is now at 3.3 percent, Connecticut's is 1.9 percent and New York's is 1.21 percent. 

When the travel advisory was put in place, infections were low in the tri-state area after the three states managed to control the spread of COVID-19 in the wake of the April peak. 

New Jersey's uptick in cases has seen infections nearly double in the last month. 

The state's health commissioner has now said there are signs of widespread community transmission for the first time since getting the virus under control.
