How Brownlow Medal winner Lachie Neale reduced his glamorous wife to tears with victory speech after she helped him rise to the top from humble beginnings in a town of just 100 people

Lachie Neale's Brownlow Medal victory marks a remarkable rise from a teenager who a decade ago was playing youth footy in a tiny farming town with a population of little more than 100 people.

The Brisbane Lions midfielder - a $1.25 favourite to be crowned the AFL's best and fairest before Sunday night's ceremony - took an unassailable lead with two rounds remaining in the virtual count to finish with 31 votes.

Neale left his wife Julie in tears after revealing the sacrifices she had made for him - having sold a successful beauty salon in Perth to follow him to Brisbane.

'My wife Jules, she's an amazing human being,' he said.

'Not many people probably know but she owned a salon in Perth before we decided to move to Brisbane. She had to sell that to come over here and follow my dreams.

'She was doing very well for herself over there but she always puts me ahead of herself when she shouldn't have to.

'She's the most selfless person I know and my biggest support, so thank you very much Jules. I love you.'

Neale grew up in Kybybolite - a town 340km south-east of Adelaide without a school or railway line and largely glued together by the footy club where the 27-year-old first played the sport competitively.

'Apart from a few dozen houses all that's left in the town is the footy club and the CFS Country Fire shed,' Neale's Kybybolite Tigers under-17 coach Andrew Shepherd told News Corp.

'And without the footy club the town just about doesn't exist.'

Neale - who played six seasons for the Fremantle Dockers before being traded to Brisbane at the end of the 2018 season - still has a close connection to his tiny home town.

He even returned home during the coronavirus pandemic to work on the family farm while the AFL season was paused.

Along with his wife, Neale drove 2,000km before the South Australian borders closed to make it home, spending his time fishing before his return to the game.

Neale was drafted to the Dockers in 2012 but thrived at his new club, earning an All-Australian selection in 2019 before taking out the Brownlow in 2020, with seven best on-ground efforts in the opening 11 rounds of the competition.

The AFL star's former youth teammate Jack Trengove said Neale had shown determination to go from his humble beginnings to the success he has achieved in his professional career.

'To think back now to all those Thursday nights when we'd be out there kicking the footy until the lights went out… if you think back to where it all started it's an incredible effort,' Trengrove said.

The Brownlow Medal was very different this year due to COVID-19, with no main ceremony as players and their partners gathered at dinners being held remotely around the country.

The league's star names came together at a variety of socially-distanced functions around the country - including Optus Stadium in Perth, Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium and the Adelaide Oval.

Masked-up AFL players and their partners in Melbourne had a very different experience of the league's 'virtual' Brownlow Medal count than their counterparts elsewhere in Australia.

At Melbourne's designated venue, proceedings took on a more depressing tone as players wore face masks as are still mandated in public in the Victorian capital.

Darcy Parish of the Essendon Bombers and Hawthorn's Jack Gunston were both pictured undertaking temperature checks, while face coverings were widespread inside the function room.

Face masks were nowhere to be seen in Adelaide as players such as Jack Viney of the Demons enjoyed a canape.

The event in Perth appeared to have a more upbeat tone too as drinks flowed at the pre-count reception.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan also addressed the Gold Coast's Metricon Stadium without a mask.

Despite his landslide victory, Neale was sombre through the early stages of the night following the Lions' heartbreaking loss to the Geelong Cats on Saturday which ended his season.

'It's exciting but I'm still feeling the effects of last night,' Neale said.

'It was disappointing. I felt like we didn't play our best footy at all and full credit to Geelong. They played and deserved to win quite comfortably in the end.

'In a weird way, I'm still pretty flat but I know what a big occasion this is.'

Neale said in his acceptance speech: 'To the footy club, the staff and the coaching staff, I think we've done such a great job. I'm so thankful to be part of the organisation. This award is for the club and the playing group.

'You have to be in a pretty successful side and win a lot of games to achieve this and I thank my teammates tremendously for all their work.

'I'm really proud to run out with them each and every week.

'There are so many people throughout my life who have helped me for a very long time. My mum Amanda, she has done so much for me and so much for my siblings. Same for my dad Robbie. I can honestly say now he is one of my best mates.'
