If it's 'discrimination' for companies to hire the best job candidates then this country really is doomed (and that's a polite word for it)

According to a government review, the practice of top firms hiring applicants with good degrees from top universities, instead of those who have poorer qualifications from lesser institutions may ‘militate against a widening access agenda’ and is ‘not necessarily consistent with a diversity agenda that a company may promote’.

In other words, it will soon be necessary for companies to hire job-applicants who aren’t as good as the rest – just as universities will have to select students who haven’t got top grades – because ‘access’ and ‘diversity’ are now more important than quality.

Kings College, Cambridge: A Government review warns firms that hiring candidates from Britain's top universities might be inconsistent with 'diversity'

It’s sheer madness ... A certain path to making British business, and therefore the British economy less successful, less globally competitive and less able to support the lunatic excesses of the equality-crazed British state.

What next? Will Premiership football clubs be obliged to hire middle-aged women who hate football because their habit of signing young men who have unusually high levels of fitness, athleticism, skill and competitive instinct discriminates against everyone else?

Will model agencies be obliged to blend their traditional line-up of absurdly tall, skinny, beautiful girls with a few fat, balding blokes whose idea of a diet is smaller portions of chips and a couple fewer beers a night?

Will the SAS now look for recruits among unfit, highly-strung individuals who are scared of the dark and loud noises?

Will the nation’s top orchestras have a quota for disadvantaged would-be musicians who are tone deaf and never got passed Grade 2 recorder?

The chattering classes have gone completely mad in their guilt-ridden, self-loathing obsession with removing any vestige of ‘elitism’ from our culture. Invariably white and middle-class, overwhelmingly educated at private schools and/or the very finest universities, they are now desperate to prevent anyone else benefitting from the same privileges they had.

Hypocrisy: Nick Clegg wants to punish young people for having the opportunities he himself enjoyed

Nick Clegg is the classic example of this syndrome, the public-school and Oxbridge-educated millionaire who attacked middle-class families for using contacts to get their children good work placements and internships when his top banker daddy had done precisely the same for him.

People like that are completely blind to their idiocy and hypocrisy. And they are equally blind to the fact that no other country on earth discriminates against the best in favour of the mediocre.

There should be no shame in being clever, athletic, beautiful or blessed with a talent for art or performance. There should be no shame in preferring the better-qualified candidate over the less successful; the hard worker over the lazy; the truly gifted over the modest plodder. There should certainly be no shame in parents doing everything they can to help their children.

The shame – the deep, lasting shame of which Britain is undoubtedly guilty – is in denying people the chance to discover, develop and display the gifts that they have. There’s absolutely no doubt that we are only using a fraction of the talent available in this country: be it academic, sporting, creative or commercial.

But that’s not because there aren’t good enough ‘diversity’ and ‘accessibility’ policies at universities or business. It’s because the education system fails millions of British children. It does not teach them, test them, stretch them or inspire them. In fact, it insults them by saying that ordinary children from modest homes are only capable of handling a dumbed-down curriculum that assumes they are dim, unimaginative and incapable of understanding anything truly worth knowing.

Now that really is an elitist, snobbish, even racist attitude. And where does it come from? Oh yes, the anti-elitists. They make me sick. But, what’s worse, they make our country even sicker.
