Newlyweds revealed as two others injured in Boston

A newlywed couple standing near the finish line at the Boston Marathon on Monday were among the more than 170 people wounded in the deadly blast.


Patrick and Jessica 'Jess' Downes were married in August. Both are avid runners, and he has run the Boston Marathon in years past.


According to an email sent to friends, Patrick Downes had surgery on Wednesday and is out of intensive care. Jessica is in surgery and the email says she may be in jeopardy of losing one of her feet.

The couple met in 2006.


Patrick, it says, is the 'ultimate Boston boy' and graduated from Boston College.


Jessica is from Sacramento, California and is described as having the 'spirit of a lion.'

She is a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, following her father, who is a radiologist, into the medical profession, according to CBS13-TV.


Neighbors told the Sacramento TV station that the couple got separated in the chaos of the explosion and were sent to two different hospitals.


She is receiving treatment at Boston Medical Center and her husband is a patient at the Beth Israel Hospital.


A representative for the couple has organized a fundraising effort to help the two cover the medical bills for their injuries.

'They have both been made aware of their severe, life changing injuries,' an email from a relative told friends.


'All good thoughts for them are appreciated.'

Neighbors in California spoke fondly of Jessica as 'absolutely adorable' with a 'bubbly personality.'

Her family has traveled to Boston to be with her.


As of Wednesday, Massachusetts General, where Jessica Downes is employed, was treating 11 patients who were injured in the marathon bombing, four of which were listed in critical condition.

Credit unions will go head-to-head with payday lenders after the Government announced it would raise the cap on interest charges so that unions do not make losses on short-term loans. The Treasury yesterday confirmed it will introduce legislation that from April 2014 would raise the interest rate ceiling on credit union loans from two per cent to three per cent a month following a consultation with lenders. Three per cent a month works out at APR of 42.6 per cent. Currently, restrictions on interest rates mean that while unions can make decent returns on long-term loans, loans of a similar length to those offered by payday lenders tend to operate at a loss. Helping hand: Short-term credit union loans will be more expensive, but more sustainable for unions and still well cheaper than payday loans.
