'I need my family behind me or my life stops here'

Shameless Mick Philpott's accomplice has written to his estranged family from prison begging for help to clear his name.

Family friend Paul Mosley, 46, claims he had nothing to do with the deaths of the six tragic children.

Earlier this month, he was found guilty of six counts of manslaughter and jailed for 17 years for helping Philpott and his 32-year-old wife Mairead set fire to their house in Derby.

Mosley has begged the family he has been estranged from for 25 years for help - and moans that he has had a 'bad year'.

Mosley writes in a rambling note from HMP Strangeways: 'So I need my family behind me because I have done nothing wrong but going down to Mick as a friend and look what he done to me because I now seen stuff and the police think I have had something to do with it but I have not.

'I need everybody behind me - if not, my life stops here.'

He also insists lies were told to the police for money, and appears to threaten those who might have spoken to the police.

His sister Angela, 48, told The Sun: 'I was horrified when I received the letter from him - I am ashamed to call him my brother.

'He's in prison, begging people to go and visit. No one will. What does he expect, he's a child killer. He didn't get long enough - I want to lock him up and throw away the key. Hanging is too good for him.'

Angela, from Derby, has not replied or spoken to Mosley.

Her partner, Andrew Lyons, 46, fears that other relatives may also have received letters and show more sympathy.

Headstones will soon mark the resting place of Duwayne, 13, Jade, 10, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five - and they will make no mention of their parents.

The six children will instead have gravestones inscribed with messages from their four grandparents.

They will be put in place at the cemetery in Derby within the next fortnight - nearly a year after the funerals of the five young brothers and their sister.

The graves are currently identified by sheets of tarpaulin held down by stones. Flowers also mark the graves of the children beside six small wooden crosses.

Three will be engraved with messages from Peggy and John Philpott first, and then from Vera and Jim Duffy. The other three will be the other way round.

The children's grandfather, Jim Duffy, 64, told the Sunday Mirror: 'When all is said and done, Mairead is still my daughter but she was part of something that caused the death of those six children and she has to be punished for that.

'I have not heard from Mairead yet – none of the family have.'

Hundreds of people filled St Mary's Church in Derby last June for the funerals after a horse-drawn cortege carrying the six small coffins processed solemnly through the streets.

The funeral was paid for by donations of more than £11,000 from the local community after residents set up a drive to raise money.

The six children died on May 11 when the council semi was set ablaze with petrol at the front door.

They were asleep upstairs and were killed by inhaling smoke.

Earlier this month, Philpott was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for life. He is expected to serve at least 15 years.

Philpott's wife Mairead and Mosley were sentenced to 17 years for their part in the twisted plot. They could be free after eight-and-a-half years.
