The singer, who died on Sunday aged 39 following a year-long battle with cancer, appeared on the show in 2002 at the start of her career.

The aim of Popstars: The Rivals was to create a girl band and boy band from auctioning singers and have them compete to get a Christmas Number One track.   

In the clip, Sarah, who was born in Berkshire in 1981, shows her strong vocals as she wows judges with her rendition. 

Out of thousands of people to audition, she impressed judges and was told by Pete Waterman: 'You're going to London!'   

Eventually, Sarah made it to the final ten girls to compete in weekly shows and was voted through to the final five, who formed group Girls Aloud.

Sarah was joined by Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, and the band was together until 2009. 

They returned to celebrate their ten-year anniversary in 2012 before splitting again in 2013 after the conclusion of their Ten: The Hits Tour. 

The group achieved twenty consecutive top ten singles - including four number ones - in the UK and six platinum studio albums before the band took a hiatus in 2009.

Sarah was reportedly planning a solo career as a blue singer prior to her cancer diagnosis and had been honing her skills as a guitarist before the diagnosis last August.  

Stars from the world of entertainment have paid tribute to the star following her untimely death to breast cancer.

Sarah, who also modelled and had a starring role in the St Trinian's film series, passed away earlier today, her family announced, just 13-months after confirming her cancer diagnosis. 

Geri Horner of the Spice Girls, who was at her first audition, paid tribute to Sarah, writing on Twitter: 'Rest in peace, Sarah Harding. You'll be remembered for the light and joy you brought to the world' .

Former Big Brother host Davina McCall wrote in a tribute to Sarah: 'So so sad to hear about Sarah... a star from the get go, hugely fun and outgoing yet also somehow fragile... love to her family and friends.'    

A message from Sarah's mother Marie was posted to the star's Instagram account today, which read: 'It's with deep heartbreak that today I'm sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away.

'Many of you will know of Sarah's battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day.

'She slipped away peacefully this morning. I'd like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved.

'I know she won't want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that's how she can be remembered instead. Marie x'
