the pensioner was punched in the floor after standing up to a racist yob who abused england's black players in their final

A pensioner was punched to the ground outside a restaurant after he stood up to a racist yob abusing England's black players following their Euro final defeat.

The 79-year-old victim was knocked to the floor and left bleeding heavily after being attacked outside an Italian restaurant in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, at 8.45pm on July 12.

The pensioner was attacked outside the restaurant by another customer, who the victim had challenged for making racist remarks about England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.

Nottinghamshire Police on Friday released shocking CCTV footage of the victim being knocked to the ground in a bid to track down the offender, who is believed to be in his late 50s or early 60s.

In the video, the victim is seen flying backwards, hitting the back of his head on the pavement before lying unmoving as a member of staff rushed to assist him.

The customer that police want to speak to about the incident is also seen standing at the counter in the video, as police slammed the 'disgraceful act of racism and violence'.

The elderly victim had gone to the restaurant to congratulate the owner, who he knew, on Italy's penalty shootout victory in the Euro 2020 final the night before.

Another customer then began shouting obscene racist remarks about Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who missed penalties during the nail-biting shoot-out.

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, challenged the thug and told him he was being racist before the man eventually went outside and the OAP picked up his takeaway order.

But when the pensioner went to get in his car, he again came across the man, who was still shouting racist comments outside the restaurant.

The victim said the next thing he knew, he was being crushed by the car door as he went to get in his car and was punched to the side of the head.

The elderly man banged his head on the pavement as he was knocked to the ground before passers-by rushed to his aid.

The victim said: 'I couldn't believe the extent of the verbal abuse that I was hearing, just complete mindless and obscene racism.

'It was very offensive towards black people and completely uncalled for.

'There is no place for this behaviour in football and I can't understand where he was coming from.'

The victim was left lying on the pavement feeling dazed after the attack, having suffered a nasty cut to his head, which was bleeding heavily.

He said lots of 'shocked' passers-by came to his aid while the cowardly thug ran off.

He added: 'Everyone was extremely shocked and rallied around me.

'The police came and were outraged by what had happened, they were very sympathetic and have been very supportive whilst they tried to track down the offender.'

He attended hospital and underwent a scan a couple of days after the incident due to the size of the lump to his head, but fortunately there were no fractures.

He added: 'I've done my best not to let the ordeal affect me.

'I was shaken up afterwards but since then I've just got on with my life.

'I would just like to see the offender held to account for his actions and would like to tell him what a racist coward he is.'

The man in the CCTV video is described as white, of a large build, with short white or grey cropped hair.

He was wearing a short-sleeved, khaki shirt, blue jeans, trainers with a white sole and a medical face mask covering his chin.

Neighbourhood Inspector Rob Lawton said: 'This was a disgraceful act of racism and violence and there is no place for this behaviour in our society.

'The victim is a pillar of the local community and has acted with bravery and the utmost integrity in challenging this man.

'Thankfully his disgraceful views are in the minority and we, like the communities we serve, are committed to tackling this behaviour and putting a stop to racism.

'My teams have been carrying out lots of enquiries since this incident happened and everyone has been outraged by this unprovoked attack.

'We are now asking people to help us track down the man in this video, if you recognise him please get in touch.'

If anyone recognises the man in this video, they are asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident 890 of 12 July.

Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
