North Carolina woman, 70, who was found entombed in concrete in the basement of her home FIRED her live-in caregiver who was accused of murder

New details have emerged in the murder of a 70-year-old woman, whose remains were found entombed in concrete in the basement of her North Carolina home last week.

Court documents reveal Lynn Keene, 70, fired her caregiver Elizabeth Carserino, 53, in June, shortly before she suddenly went missing in Avery County.

Carserino was hired to be Keene's live-in caregiver earlier this year, after she fell and suffered a traumatic brain injury, WSOC-TV reported.

Neighbors said Carserino was living in her former employer's home until late July, according to court documents.

Relatives filed a missing person report for Keene on July 30, saying they last spoke to her on June 14.

When Avery County detectives initially checked Keene's home, they discovered it was secured and her 2000 Lincoln Town Car was missing.

Officers with the Cherokee Police Department later discovered Keene's abandoned car on Blue Wing Road in Cherokee and traced Carserino's cellphone to the area, according to court documents.

The vehicle was found with two empty bags of concrete in the trunk, according to WBTV in Charlotte, leading to a search warrant for Keene's house.

When detectives searched Keene's home, they found blood evidence on the walls, ceiling and floor of a bathroom as well as Keene´s remains entombed in concrete in the basement.

'We saw a large amount of flies and that’s an indicator of something deceased,' Sheriff's Det. Tim Austin said when describing the moment detectives entered the basement.

State Bureau of Investigation agents broke enough of the concrete to discover human remains inside, according to WBTV. An autopsy and dental records confirmed that it was Keene.

Austin said Keene's remains appeared to show blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation. 'She had blunt force trauma to the head as well as strangulation by ligature - it was a belt,' he said.

In their search for Carserino, investigators found surveillance video from a video story in Marion that showed the carer driving Keene's car and using one of her bank cards.

Deputies have suggested that someone else may have been involved, as the two large bags of concrete - 80 pounds each - would have been large for her to carry by herself.

Court documents state Keene was strangled with a belt and struck in the head but it still unclear when she died.

On Sunday, Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye announced Carserino was taken into custody and charged with murder, identity theft, larceny of motor vehicle and financial card theft.

Carserino was held at Avery County jail on secured bond of more than $1.6 million, the sheriff said.

Her first court appearance could be as soon as Monday, Frye said.
