A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being stabbed in the chest and throat at a home in Sydney's west.

Police were called to the home in Carramar about 12.20pm on Sunday where they also found a two-year-old boy with scratches.

The man, 22, was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition while four other people at the scene were treated for superficial injuries.

Police confirmed a 30-year-old woman was arrested after the incident and taken to Fairfield Police Station. She has not been charged.

Blood-soaked clothing and bandages were seen on the road directly outside the home on the quiet suburban street.

Paramedics were reportedly met with a 'quite chaotic' scene when they arrived.

'We were called with reports of a male stabbed, on arrival it was a fairly confronting scene,' NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Braden Robinson said, according to the Daily Telegraph.

'We did find one male with a stab wound to his stomach and his neck.'

'We did also attend to four other patients on the scene for superficial injuries.'
