'I'm in it to win it': Conservative radio host Larry Elder blasts 'anti-science' Gavin Newsom as a 'mask hypocrite' over new COVID restrictions a month before facing California governor in recall election

Conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom as 'anti-science' for requiring masks despite widespread vaccination in the state.

Elder, who is among several Republican candidates vying to replace Newsom as governor in next month's special recall election, told supporters in Pacific Palisades on Saturday that he's making a run for the top job in Sacramento despite the difficult odds.

'If not you, who? If not now, when? So I'm in it to win it,' Elder told a crowd of supporters.

'Where do I start about the job this man, Gavin Newsom, has done in the last two years?' he said, listing a litany of policies that he believes were damaging to the state.

Conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom as 'anti-science' for requiring masks despite widespread vaccination in the state

'He slams down the state of California in a way that is more severe than any of the other 49 governors.'

Elder accused Newsom of 'ignoring science' by reinstituting a mask mandate and COVID testing for state workers despite the mass vaccination efforts.

Reopen California's Schools and another group called Let Them Breathe have sued over the mandate.

The CDC is recommending a mask mandate for kids because they cannot be vaccinated.

States are yet to react to it. Newsom is the only governor who is imposing a mask mandate across all public schools, with no wiggle room for localities.

Elder also noted that Newsom's 'own kids were enjoying in-person, private education' while public school children were forced to learn virtually during the recent school year.

Last week, Newsom was dubbed a COVID hypocrite again after enforcing a mask mandate for kids in schools while allowing his own son and daughter to attend a basketball camp which doesn't enforce face coverings.

Now, Newsom has pulled both Hunter and his older sister Montana out of the camp and his team said he 'missed' the email which stated the kids wouldn't have to wear masks.

This is the guidance the camp issued before kids arrived on Monday. It says masks would not be required. The Newsoms say they 'missed' it and only realized after seeing the photo of Hunter online

Parents were also asked to sign a waiver for their kids which said they wouldn't hold the club responsible if the kids got COVID-19. It's unclear if Newsom or his wife signed it for Hunter and Montana

Newsom introduced a statewide mask mandate on July 9 for kids at schools that means all teachers and students must wear masks indoors.

It is being widely criticized by parents who say they should decide if their kid wears a mask or not, and two advocacy groups have already filed a lawsuit against the state to fight it.

On Monday, a photo of Newsom's 10-year-old son Hunter and a group of other kids appeared on the Facebook page of his $200-a-week summer basketball day camp in which none of them were wearing masks.

The camp does not enforce masks, but it says kids and staff are welcome to wear one if they wish to.

Anti-lockdown campaigners said it proved Newsom's hypocrisy that his kids could go maskless while others were to be forced to wear them in schools, rather than being given a choice.

Now, Newsom has pulled both Hunter and his older sister Montana out of the camp and his team say he 'missed' the email which stated the kids wouldn't have to wear masks.

Critics say it's 'heartbreaking' Hunter and Montana will now miss out and that they ought to be allowed to remain in camp with their friends, choosing whether or not to wear masks.

They also say the kids are having to pay the price of their father's political games.

Elder also noted the 'French Laundry' scandal - a reference to the restaurant where Newsom was photographed with prominent lobbyists.

Last year, at the height of California's COVID disaster when people were being told to stay at home and only mix with immediate family, Newsom was photographed at the private dinner with ten other people in the exclusive restaurant.

At the time, he said he didn't know there were going to be so many people there, and issued a statement saying: 'We're all human'.

'He incurred a $12,000 wine tab,' Elder told his supporters. 'That's just for the wine.'

He added: 'He was sitting with the very same lobbyists and medical professionals who drafted the mandates they were violating by not wearing masks and by not socially distancing.

'It's hypocrisy.'

Elder also hit out at Newsom for 'still paying people not to work.'

'This guy slammed down the hopes and dreams of countless Californians who lost businesses,' Elder said of the governor's oft-criticized lockdown policies.

'Only about half of the jobs have been restored here pre-pandemic whereas the national average is two-thirds.'

Last week, a poll revealed Elder is gaining popularity with California voters.

The Emerson College/ Nexstar Media poll, published last Friday, found 48 percent of voters still want Newsom to remain in office, even as momentum for a recall grows.

Forty-three percent of people polled now say they will vote to recall Newsom - up from 38 percent in March.

If Newsom is removed from office, there are 40 candidates currently vying to replace him - and the new poll shows Elder leading the pack.

The 69-year-old Republican gets 16 percent of the vote share among those candidates, ahead of businessman John Cox and former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer, who are tied in second place with 6 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, the poll shows Caitlyn Jenner struggling to gain traction among voters despite widespread name recognition. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is polling at just four percent.

However, a majority of voters - 53 percent - say they 'don't yet know' who they would vote for should Newsom be removed from office.

And it will be an uphill battle for any of the candidates to replace Newsom, given that nearly half of all voters want him to serve out the remainder of his term.

It comes despite the fact a majority of voters polled believe he is doing a 'poor' job addressing California's homelessness, drought and wildfires crises.

Elder - who is a black Republican  - especially seems like a long shot to win the Governorship in ultra-liberal California.

However, it wouldn't be the first time a Republican had assumed office following the recall of a Democrat Gov.

Back in 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor after Democrat Gray Davis was recalled 11 months into his second term.

Elder only recently announced his bid for governor.

Last month, he told the Associated Press that he initially was reluctant to become a candidate in a state where Democrats hold a lopsided grip on power in Sacramento.

But a number of his Republicans peers, including fellow conservative radio host Dennis Prager, encouraged him to run.

The talk show host added that he is passionate about California issues like its out-of-control homeless crisis, spiking crime rates, water shortages and power outages - in addition to the hit the economy took after Newsom's coronavirus lockdowns.

'I have common sense. I have good judgment. I'm born and raised here. I think I understand the state,' he said.

Elder runs a nationally-syndicated talk show and is a regular guest on Fox News. His website dubs him as the 'sage from South Central,' referencing the area of Los Angeles where he grew up.

Elder, who is black, writes on his website that he is 'unafraid to take on liberals and the Black Lives Matter movement' and that his political beliefs include 'returning to the bedrock Constitutional principles of limited government and maximum personal responsibility.'

Some Newsom supporters claimed that the recall is being led by far-right extremists and white nationalists, to which Edler said, 'Do I look like a white nationalist?'

Compared to the other candidates, Elder said that his name recognition, outsider status and communication skills make him stand out.

He is also a staunch advocate for school choice programs, drawing on his experience attending a disadvantaged high school in a historically black neighborhood.

In a statement, Newsom campaign spokesman Dan Newman called Elder 'another Trump supporter' attempting to appeal to the former president's fan base.

The election is set for Sept. 14, though voters will received ballots earlier by mail.

The ballot had two parts, one that asks voters if they want to remove Newsom from office and the next asking which candidate should replace him.

The votes for his replacement will only be counted if more than half of voters say 'yes' to the first question.

The  new poll also shows there is growing support for the removing Newsom from office - with 43 percent of potential voters say they would vote to recall, up from 38 percent in March

Many voters already know Newsom from his 10-year career in California office, first as lieutenant governor and as governor in 2018 when he won against Cox. He served as San Francisco's mayor for the prior six years.

Democrats have said that Newsom is in a better position to defeat the recall now that the state's economy is open again and its coronavirus case numbers are low.

The recall gained momentum in the beginning of the pandemic when many disapproved of the governor's lockdown orders. Newsom drew even more ire from his opponents when he was seen at a party with lobbyist friends at a fancy restaurant despite the state being in lockdown.

The governor's standing also suffered from a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal at the state unemployment agency.
