Thunderstorms and hail are set to lash the country this week as Met Office issues yellow warnings for flooding

Britons are set to brace themselves for yet more rain tonight and into this week - although the outlook will be brighter for England's crunch Euro 2020 semi-final match at Wembley on Wednesday evening.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland is in place until midnight tonight - after nearly two inches of rain fell in Plymouth, in the South-West of England, today.

Northern England is expected to also experience 'muggy' temperatures which will remain stubbornly high at around 61F overnight.

On Monday, further rain is expected for much of Northern England, with showers, as well as hail, also set to fall in parts of the south.

Photos showed the extent of the wet weather, with two women shoppers in London seen sheltering from the rain under a coat, whilst cricket spectators who had gathered to watch England's third one-day international against Sri Lanka in Bristol also had to put up their umbrellas as the heavens opened.

Although today was a rest day for tennis players competing at Wimbledon, play is likely to be disrupted on Tuesday with more rain expected. Play was stopped for around 90 minutes on Saturday due to wet weather.

Temperatures will also drop to their lowest point of the week on Tuesday, with highs of 66.2F expected in the South and 60.8F in the North.

Speaking of the rest of Sunday, Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told MailOnline: 'Through the remainder of the day we've got heavy and thundery showers for northern parts of the UK. You could see up to 30mm of rain in a few spots.

'We have a yellow rain warning out in those areas. It will be a fairly wet night for northern England with drier conditions further south.

'Generally a mild night tonight. Most places will see quite a mild night, particularly in the north where it will feel fairly humid and muggy with those thundery showers.

'It's only a low of 10, with some parts of northern England not getting much below 15 or 16 tonight. It's a pretty muggy night up there.

'Nine or ten is probably what it will be like down south. Towns and cities will be hovering around 12 or 13.

For Tuesday's weather, he added: 'There's an area of lower pressure that crossed southern parts of the UK. That's going to bring wind and rain. Tuesday is set to be a windy day across England and Wales.

'Unfortunately there will be a fair bit of rain across most of the southern half of the UK. I expect there won't be much play at Wimbledon.

'The bulk of the rainfall will be across the higher ground of Wales and Western side of the Pennines, where we could see 20-30mm 0.8-1.1 by the end of the day.

'Down in Wimbledon itself it's not quite so bad. It will be on off. Maximum of 5mm

'It's the coolest day of the week, with a high of only 19 in the south and probably only 16 in the north.'

Fortunately, he said things would be brighter from Wednesday onwards, meaning that fans hoping to watch England compete against Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley will likely not need an umbrella.

'It will turn drier and temperatures will recover back to low 20s 68 so we will be back up to 23 or 24 75.2 by the end of the week,' he said.

The wet weather halted cricket matches in Manchester this afternoon, while images showed shoppers in Covent Garden, London, sheltering under their coats.

Cricketing play was also abandoned in Bristol, where England's players were competing against Sri Lanka in the third one-day international.
