'I was successful, rich and terribly unhappy': Natalie Imbruglia admits she struggle to cope with the pressure of following up her breakout hit Torn

Her debut single remains one of the best selling singles of all time, having sold more than 4 million physical copies.

And Natalie Imbruglia has spoken about the intense pressure she felt to follow on from that immensely successful entry to the music industry, during an interview with Sunday Life.

'I don’t think I could ever go through anything as difficult as writing a second album after that song,' admitted the 46-year-old.

After Torn landed her a record contract at 22 years old, Natalie said she 'was successful, rich and terribly unhappy.'

'I went very strange. I needed to hide myself away,' the Neighbours alum said of her subsequent mental state. 

Torn, a cover of an Ednaswap song, eventually became part of Imbruglia's debut album, Left of the Middle.

It has sold 7 million copies and is the highest selling debut album by a pop/rock/alternative female artist.

Her second album, White Lillies Island, received a mixed critical reception and sold a comparatively disappointing one million copies worldwide.

Imbruglia's record label refused to release her third album after alleging that it wasn't radio-friendly.

In the intervening years, Imbruglia has released three more albums, featured in several movies and served as a judge on The X Factor UK and The X Factor Australia. 

Her last album, titled Male, featured Natalie covering hit songs from male artists. 

Recently, the Sydney-born songstress revealed she will be releasing a new album, Firebird, in September.

Natalie also showed off her amazing youthful looks in a promotional clip for her single Build It Better. 

In a press statement, the Australian-born beauty said her latest song is about 'surrendering to the chaos and seeing what’s on the other side of it is a good life lesson.' 

The song, which she wrote amid the Coronavirus lockdown in 2020, is an upbeat track which looks to empower fans to stay positive amid dire times. 

Natalie, who become a mother to her son Max in 2019 after undergoing IVF via a sperm donor, revealed that much of her personal experiences have gone into the inspiration behind the lyrics.

'Letting something fall apart, and being okay with that, is something that I have had to do in my life, numerous times, but especially moving into this record and becoming a mum,' she continued.
