Authoritarian Britain! Nearly two-thirds of public back banning vaccine refusers from nightclubs and football matches – while majority also wants them blocked from pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport

Britons overwhelmingly back banning vaccine refusers from a host of settings, a poll revealed today.

Exclusive research for MailOnline found that nearly two-thirds are in favour of barring those who have not received two jabs from nightclubs and football matches.

A majority would also be happy to see them locked out of pubs, restaurants, non-essential shops and public transport once the whole adult population has been offered the chance to get vaccinated.

The public's tough stance could help explain why the government has been sabre-rattling over using 'vaccine passports' despite threats of a huge Tory revolt.

Boris Johnson has said proving jab status is set to become compulsory at nightclubs from September, and extending that to pubs and other venues has not been ruled out.

Vaccine passports are already recommended by the government across a range of events, with ministers saying they are determined to 'coax and cajole' young people to get their doses amid concerns about lower take-up.

In the poll by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 36 per cent said they 'strongly supported' the requirement at nightclubs, and another 26 per cent 'supported' it.

Some 21 per cent were opposed, 12 per cent strongly, while 17 per cent were either neutral or did not know.

For pubs and restaurants, 58 per cent were supportive - 32 per cent strongly - and just 21 per cent were against.

Making vaccination a condition of using non-essential shops was backed by 51 per cent, with 26 per cent opposed.

And 54 per cent endorsed the idea for public transport, compared to 25 per cent who rejected it.

Redfield & Wilton strategies questioned 1,500 people yesterday, with the results weighted to match the wider population.

The figures emerged as more than 50 Tory MPs signalled they could revolt against the government's ''misguided' vaccine passport plan if it comes to a vote in September.

They have branded the proposals 'completely unnecessary, bureaucratic and unworkable'.

Despite the huge scale of the uprising, it might well be pointless as Labour has indicated it is unlikely to oppose the plans if they include a provision for tests to be used as well as vaccine status.

It comes after the government was accused of introducing passports by stealth after the NHS App was updated with 'domestic' and 'travel' options for Britons to prove their vaccination status.

Ministers have triggered fresh anger by suggesting it is a 'smart policy' for companies to insist employees are double-jabbed before they can return to offices.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tories, told Sky News the move would be a 'massive step and a misguided one', saying: 'The policy would discriminate against the young, against those who have medical or ethical reasons why they can't be vaccinated and many ethnic minority groups.'

More than 40 Tories have signed a declaration expressing their opposition to the idea with campaign group Big Brother Watch.
