YouTube threatens to ban ANY channels posting voter fraud claims as Big Tech tries to damp down conspiracy theories after Capitol riot

YouTube has announced that it will temporarily suspend any channels that post videos with false claims of voter fraud in the US presidential election, a day after deleting a video posted by Donald Trump which praised those involved in the Capitol riot.

Channels will be hit with a strike for content 'in violation of our policies', and banned permanently after three strikes in 90 days, the website said.

Recently updated site rules have banned 'content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches changed the outcome of any past U.S. presidential election.'

The implementation of the strike system from YouTube comes as President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were locked until at least January 20th after his supporters stormed the US Capitol building in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.

'Due to the disturbing events that transpired yesterday, and given that the election results have now been certified, starting today *any* channels posting new videos with false claims in violation of our policies will now receive a strike,' Youtube said in a statement they shared to Twitter.

'Over the last month, we’ve removed thousands of videos which spread misinformation claiming widespread voter fraud changed the result of the 2020 election, including several videos President Trump posted to his channel.'

The release states that there had been an initial grace period mentioned in a December update, set for Inauguration Day.

'Channels that receive a strike are temporarily suspended from posting or live streaming,' the release continues. 'Channels that receive three strikes in the same 90-day period will be permanently removed from YouTube. We apply our policies and penalties consistently, regardless of who uploads it.'

YouTube's guidelines against 'Spam, deceptive practices, & scams policies' now includes a section on 'Presidential Election Integrity'.

It outlaws 'content that advances false claims that widespread fraud, errors, or glitches changed the outcome of any past U.S. presidential election (Note: this applies to elections in the United States only). For the U.S. 2020 presidential election, this applies to content uploaded on or after December 9, 2020.'

In an extraordinary blog post Thursday, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg accused Trump of using the platform ‘to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.’

The decision will likely put pressure on Twitter after Trump’s favorite social media platform suspended him for 12 hours on Wednesday evening.

Zuckerberg said the president used his Facebook page 'to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building' and that allowing him to freely post in the final 13 days of his term would pose too great a risk.

‘The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,’ Zuckerberg wrote.

In the 13 days left in his presidency, Trump will not be able to communicate to his more than 35.2 million followers on Facebook.

Trump's social media blackout

Multiple social media companies have announced that Trump's accounts have been suspended following the violence at the Capitol:

Facebook - Account access suspended until at least January 20th

Instagram - Owned by Facebook. Account access suspended until at least January 20th

Twitter - Trump's access to @realdonaldtrump account for 12 hours on Wednesday and deleted three incendiary tweets.

YouTube - Video posted by Trump after the violence removed. Site-wide ban on videos which promote election fraud conspiracies

Snapchat - Trump's account disabled 'indefinitely'

Twitch - Trump's account disabled 'indefinitely'

The president will also be blocked from his 24.6 million followers on Instagram, a Facebook-owned property.

‘His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world,’ the statement by Zuckerberg read.

‘We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect - and likely their intent - would be to provoke further violence.

‘Following the certification of the election results by Congress, the priority for the whole country must now be to ensure that the remaining 13 days and the days after inauguration pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms.

‘Over the last several years, we have allowed President Trump to use our platform consistent with our own rules, at times removing content or labeling his posts when they violate our policies.

‘We did this because we believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech.

‘But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.’

Zuckerberg concluded: ‘We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.

‘Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.’
