Tragedy as man drowns while swimming at a popular holiday hotspot as rescuers continue to search for his friend

A man has died and another is missing at a popular holiday hotspot on Christmas Day. 

The pair were swimming at Squeaky Beach, Wilsons Promontory in Victoria at about 3.40pm when they got into trouble.

A member of the public jumped in and dragged one of the men out back onto the sand and performed CPR.

Unfortunately, the man could not be saved.

A desperate search is now underway for another missing swimmer with local police and a helicopter scouring nearby waters.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The devastating news comes after 10 people were pulled from the surf by heroic lifeguards at a popular beach in Queensland.

Three people are in hospital and another seven were treated by paramedics after an urgent assistance call was made about 11.40am on Friday.

A teenage girl and a school-aged child were rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where they are reportedly stable. 

A woman in her 40s was also rushed to the hospital and was being treated for ingesting salt water. 

The remaining group were assessed at the beach and required no further treatment. 

Queensland Ambulance Service reminded people to stay safe over summer, revealing it has responded to 65 near-drownings already this season.
