Jerry Falwell Jr. 'spent Liberty University funds on pro-Trump causes including $2.2million to conservative lobbying nonprofit and $50,000 on political ads, and hired president's allies to campus think tank'

Jerry Falwell Jr. spent millions in Liberty University money to regularly promote Donald Trump, hiring his allies and paying for political adverts, according to a report by Politico.

The disgraced former president and chancellor of Liberty, who resigned in August amid allegations of an extra marital affair, is said to have used the funds to set up a university-funded campus 'think tank' in 2019.

Politico reports how Fawell, one of Trump's most vocal and ardent supporters in the 2016 election, created the Falkirk Center on campus to promote the Republican and his supporters.

It then hired one of Trump's former advisers as well as his current attorney Jenna Ellis, the news site says. It has been pushing Trump's baseless election fraud claims since his defeat to Biden using social media and podcasts, the report also claims.

Politico also details how the Falkirk Center bought at least $50,000 in Facebook adverts to promote Trump and other GOP hopefuls; the uni gave more than $2 million to Republican Ralph Reed's Faith and Freedom Coalition in 2018, they say.

And it also alleges how the think tank, named after Jerry and GOP activist Charlie Kirk, has produced little work resembling a traditional university study center.

Falwell Jr. stepped down at Liberty, one of the nation's largest evangelical Christian colleges found by his father, after pool boy Giancarlo Granda said he had a years-long sexual relationship with his wife, Becki.

Granda, a younger business partner of the Falwell family, also alleged that Jerry,  an ardent supporters of President Trump, participated in some of the liaisons by watching them have sex.

The Falkirk Center has in recent weeks hosted podcasts featuring Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani. And it hired former adviser Sebastian Gorka and current Trump attorney Jenna Ellis to serve as fellows.

One advert paid for by the center read: 'Pray For Our President.' Another said: 'Be a radical for our republic.'

A source told Politico: 'You can’t really call something a think tank, and yet it doesn’t put out academic research, or papers, or any kind of scholarship.'

But Scott Lamb, a spokesperson for Liberty, told Politico: 'While any academic think tank will have its detractors, the university and the center have received hundreds of supportive emails” since Falwell resigned earlier this year.'

He added: 'While much of the Falkirk content is focused on digital branding, we have been building a pipeline of material for print publication in 2021 that includes writings from various Christian professors and researchers both at Liberty University and from around the country.'

Neither Falwell or Kirk have commented.

Falwell last week dropped a lawsuit against Liberty University that argued the evangelical school defamed him when he resigned amid a sex scandal involving his wife and their pool boy.

Shortly after Falwell's departure, Liberty announced it was opening an independent investigation into his tenure as president, a wide-ranging inquiry that would look into financial, real estate and legal matters.

Following the news he was dropping his lawsuit, Liberty said in a statement that Falwell's 'unilateral and voluntary dismissal was not prompted by any payments, promises, or other consideration' from the school.

A Virginia judge granted a motion to dismiss the case for now, which means he could refile a similar lawsuit later, the News & Advance reports. Court documents gave no indication of why Falwell opted to withdraw the lawsuit.

'I've decided to take a time out from my litigation against Liberty University, but I will continue to keep all options on the table for an appropriate resolution to the matter,' Falwell said in a brief statement.

Although the Falwells have acknowledged that Granda and Becki had an affair, Falwell has denied any participation.

The couple allege that Granda sought to extort them by threatening to reveal the relationship unless he was paid substantial amounts of money.

Four years after his original endorsement of Trump, Falwell took lower profile in the reelection bid.

But he declared unwavering support for Trump, whom he described as 'the most pro-evangelical Christian president we've ever had — not in his lifestyle, but in his actions, and that is what matters.'

Falwell had predicted, Trump 'will win and he will win big.'

Before his resignation, Falwell had already been on an indefinite leave of absence after an uproar over a photo he posted on social media of him and his wife's pregnant assistant, both with their pants unzipped.

Granda told Talking Points Memo as recently as last month that the couple 'groomed' him after picking him up in 2012 at the pool of the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami, where he was working.

He says he thinks the couple secretly recorded him having sex with Becki and later allegedly used it for leverage when he tried to stop the affair.

The Falwells have denied this and say Granda tried to sell 'intimate pictures' of Becki, which he denies.
