Miracle boy Ace, one, wakes up from a coma after horror car crash that saw his parent's SUV plunge into a dam and kill two of his siblings
A baby boy who was left fighting for his life after a horror crash that killed his two siblings has woken from a coma.
One-year-old Ace was travelling with his parents Dylan Wadley, 23, and fiancee, Mel Martin, 33, to their home in Pratten, Queensland, when their Land Rover crashed through a guardrail on Sunday afternoon.
The car, which had their four children inside, went hurtling into Wyaralong Dam near Beaudesert in Queensland's south-east.
Ms Martin's 13-year-old son Leo Larsen and four-year-old daughter Mia couldn't be saved, despite Mr Wadley's desperate efforts to rescue the pair trapped in the back seat.
Ace was airlifted to Queensland Children's Hospital in a critical condition and his five-week-old sister Hope miraculously escaped without serious injury.
Leo and his sister Mia were unable to be saved while Ace (being held by his brother) is clinging to life in a critical condition
Mia 4, and Leo, 13, were trapped in the back seat of the submerged vehicle and were unable to be saved
The small boy had started to make progress on Thursday, 7news reported.
He had woken from his coma and was in a stable condition.
His parents remain at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The children's grandmother posted about the tragedy on Sunday night in an effort to raise funds for the family, the Courier Mail reported.
'My grandson, partner and children were in a tragic car accident today... two children didn't survive and a third child in a critical condition,' she wrote.
Mia and Leo died in the dam tragedy on Sunday while their little brother Ace (in basket) is still fighting for life in a critical condition. The children are pictured after Dylan Wadley proposed to their mum Mel Martin
The car was carrying two adults and four children when it careened off Beaudesert Boonah Road in Wyaralong, southeast Queensland, and into a nearby dam about 2pm on Sunday
'Grandson has serious leg injuries and is going to surgery tomorrow morning,' she wrote.
Mr Wadley desperately tried to free his family from the submerged car, which was underwater for some time.
Witnesses, including an off-duty doctor and paramedic assisted rescue crews in dragging the family out of the water.
The family were on their way home from Pimpama on the Gold Coast to Pratten, near Warwick at the time, a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
Police are investigating whether fatigue may have caused the tragic accident.
'The vehicle appears to have veered to the left and struck a three-strand wire road barrier before travelling across the road onto the opposite side and collided again with the barrier there,' police Inspector Doug McDonald said.
Dylan Wadley, 23, and his fiancee, Mel Martin, 33, are mourning the deaths of Mia, 4, and Leo, 13, . Baby girl Hope (held by her mum ) survived while toddler Ace (on dad's shoulders) is fighting for life
Four-year-old Mia died the tragedy while her baby sister Hope (pictured together) escaped unharmed
The car was submerged for some time before rescue crews were able to pull the survivors out, a Queensland Police spokesman said
'The vehicle has subsequently rolled down a stone embankment and came to rest on its roof in a semi-submerged position in the Wyaralong Dam.'
'Alcohol doesn't appear on initial investigations to be a factor but we keep an open mind in relation to all the fatal five, and in particular, people travelling long distances.
'Fatigue is a real big killer on our roads, and that's certainly part of our investigation for this matter.
'Absolutely tragic for the family and friends — obviously the social network of that family group would be very wide.'
