Devastated father pays tribute to his ‘big-hearted’ son, 26, who died from coronavirus weeks before he was due to move in with his ‘soul mate’

A devastated father has paid tribute to his 'big-hearted' son after he died from coronavirus just weeks before he was set to move in with his 'soul mate'.  

Matthew Pearson, 26, from Leeds, died at home on October 1 just a few days after he tested positive for Covid-19. 

His father Gary Pearson described how he was 'beyond devastated' that his son had passed away and the family do not know how Matthew contracted the virus.

Marketing manager Matthew, who graduated from Huddersfield University with a First, was set to move in with his girlfriend of three years and 'love of his life' Hayley. 

Speaking to Leeds Live, Mr Pearson said: 'When he was born I instantly knew that we had a beautiful and unique bond like I did when Gemma (Matthew's sister) was born.

'Matthew loved his family and he loved spending time all together which we did regularly.'

Gary continued: 'Hayley has become a very special part of our family. He loved her and always will beyond words and I know that Hayley feels the same.' 

He revealed how Hayley will always be apart of their family and told how the pair were 'completely happy' together.  

Gary described how he 'loved' hearing about Hayley and Matthew's 'amazing trip to Thailand' and told how the couple were laughing 'constantly'.

It comes after Britain has recorded a further 26,860 coronavirus cases, up 7.6 per cent on last Saturday - as deaths rose by 462 in 24 hours and scientists warned sticking to lockdown rules for the next two weeks would be 'crucial' to ensuring families can spend Christmas together.

Last Saturday the UK confirmed another 24,957 positive Covid tests, meaning today's total demonstrated a rise of 7.6 per cent.

A weekly report from the Office for National Statistics found that England's outbreak had stayed relatively flat in the first week of November, with only a four per cent rise in daily infections, indicating a potential slow down in the virus' spread.
