Colorado homeowner is reduced to tears after finding a heartwarming note from firefighters who saved his home during record-breaking wildfires
Firefighters in Colorado are being praised, not just for battling the state's numerous blazes, but for leaving behind some kindness along the way.
Daniel Stones feared his cabin in Grand County would burn to the ground as the dangerous East Troublesome Fire encroached upon his property.
Firefighters were able to save the cabin, though.
According to 9NEWS, a county contractor was brought to the property over the weekend to winterize it, shutting off water and clearing out pipes.
While the contractor was working, they came across a note attached to the house.
Daniel Stones tweeted out the handwritten note left on his cabin by the Meeker firefighters
Just days earlier, Stones expected his cabin to burn to the ground as a result of a wildfire
But firefighters were ultimately able to save the cabin in Grand County, Colorado
The note read: 'If this note finds you, we must have done something right. Sorry for the loss of your shed and we had to cut the wood fence to save the house. Things got really hot. We stayed as long as possible.'
Ultimately, while the shed was lost and the fence was cut, the cabin remained, something Stones is very grateful for.
'It just melts your heart,' Stones said to KDVR. 'I’m a grown man and I can admit this, I wept. It was just so touching.'
Stones said he openly wept after a contractor came across the heartfelt handwritten note
Stones is showing his appreciate for the Meeker Fire Department with a fundraiser
The East Troublesome Fire continues to rage, burning over 192,000 acres and counting
The note was signed by Engine 1446, Meeker, Co. 81641.
'It is kind of surreal, we all don’t really do this job for the limelight,' South Zone Fire Management Officer Kyle Fray told KDVR. 'The main thing for us is we’re really glad he’ll be able to go to his house and it’s still standing.'
Stones is taking his appreciation for the firefighters a step further, creating a GoFundMe for the Meeker Fire Department. As of early Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser garnered over $2,000 in donations, with a stated goal of $10,000.
The East Troublesome Fire is the second-biggest fire in Colorado history, according to Fox News. It has burned over 192,000 acres so far and is just 20 percent contained.
Two residents were killed by the fire when they refused evacuation orders.
Meanwhile, the biggest wildfire in Colorado history, the Cameron Peak Fire, is still burning, having destroyed over 208,000 acres and 200 homes so far; it is 64 percent contained.
