Detectives investigating the death of a 23-year-old man in 1992 believe he was last seen walking home.

Steven Clark vanished in 1992 and although his body was never found, police have been treating his disappearance as murder following a recent cold case review.

Steven's elderly parents Doris and Charles have been arrested and questioned about his death and their home in Marske-by-the-Sea, Cleveland, has been searched.

Doris and Charles have since been released on bail by police.

In 1992, the missing person's report said that Steven was on a family walk on December 28 when he used a public toilet in Saltburn at around 3pm.

His mother also used the toilet and waited for him to come out before returning home when he did not appear again.

A witness has come forward since the recent police appeals to say she believed she saw Steven Clark, who walked with a pronounced limp, in Marske that afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page believed he was on his way to his home address when he was seen, and that he was alive between 3pm and 4pm and in Marske.

Mr Page said: 'I'm pleased with the information that we have so far, as we're building up a picture of what Steven was like and the relationships that he had with those around him.

'The public is key to this case, and by ensuring people living and working in Marske see our appeal through the digivan (digital display van), we will raise awareness across the whole community.

'The potential sighting of Steven is absolutely key for the investigation and forms the basis of our appeal on the ground.'

Cleveland Police have also released more details about Steven Clark in a bid to uncover the truth.

Steven was born in Colchester, Essex, in 1969 and lived near Edinburgh when he was two-years-old.

He was hit by a lorry in Kirkliston which left him seriously injured.

Steven attended school in Kimbolten, Cambridgeshire, before emigrating to South Africa where he attended the Muriel Brand School near Johannesburg.

He returned from Africa after 10 years and lived in Guildford, Surrey, before moving to Marske in 1991 where he worked for the Leonard Cheshire Home - known as Marske Hall.

Mrs Clark last week denied the couple murdered their son, saying the situation was 'absolutely ludicrous'.

Speaking to the Mirror, Charles said: 'I am amazed at the search, I have no idea at all why they did it.

'But I can't say anything more because I am still under arrest and on police bail.'

Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

On Saturday morning, five police cars and vans, a crime scene investigation vehicle and an incident command unit could be seen parked outside the semi-detached house.
