Paid 99 into obsolete account bank won't give back

On August 29 I mistakenly paid £99.01 from my RBS account to an obsolete account using my computer. The money should have gone to Barclaycard.

I have reported this to RBS, but have been passed from one department to another for weeks.

I’ve been an RBS customer for 50 years and I really resent being treated like this. I am 80, but still compos mentis, although not completely computer literate. I. L., Fife.

Online payment: I paid money into an obsolete account, and now I'm struggling to get my money back from my bank.

Tony Hazell, of Money Mail, says: Banks are very keen to get us to do as much work for them as possible. If only they were as keen to help out when we make a mistake!

It’s very simple to pay bills online, but as you have discovered much less easy to get your money back if you accidentally send it to the wrong account.

This is another example of where technology seems to have raced ahead of consumer protection.

RBS has looked into this and traced the funds, which are now back in your account.

It has also been in touch with you to apologise and paid £30 as a gesture of goodwill.

But anyone who uses internet banking should take note of your case, because once you press the send button on a payment, it’s very difficult to get your cash back.
