Oklahoma tornado: National Guard called in as looters storm hospital, reports claim

A number of heartless looters have emerged amid the tragedy of the deadly Oklahoma tornado, storming a storm-damaged hospital facility and helping themselves to various items, a report claims.

Reports of looting came in as Moore, one of the hardest-hit towns in the storm, deals with the loss of more than 51 people who have been confirmed dead, and another 120 injured.

The vandals were spotted at the Moore Medical Center, a small facility that sustained damage in the twister.

Credit unions will go head-to-head with payday lenders after the Government announced it would raise the cap on interest charges so that unions do not make losses on short-term loans. The Treasury yesterday confirmed it will introduce legislation that from April 2014 would raise the interest rate ceiling on credit union loans from two per cent to three per cent a month following a consultation with lenders. Three per cent a month works out at APR of 42.6 per cent. Currently, restrictions on interest rates mean that while unions can make decent returns on long-term loans, loans of a similar length to those offered by payday lenders tend to operate at a loss. Helping hand: Short-term credit union loans will be more expensive, but more sustainable for unions and still well cheaper than payday loans.
