Ramped up: County Championship may lack established stars but is full of young talent says Mark Ramprakash 9 Apr 2013 22:30 “In the 1980s you had more truly outstanding cricketers but first-class cricket now, especially in Division One, is a higher all-round standard" North star: Yorkshire's Gary Ballance played for England Lions over the winter North star: Yorkshire's Gary Ballance played for England Lions over the winter Brendon Thorne English cricket’s young guns will bid to start the new season in a blaze of glory on Thursday. That's when the County Championship gets under way, with Mark Ramprakash predicting several could be knocking on the door of Test selection later in the summer. For the first time in 26 years, Ramprakash will be watching from the sidelines when the first ball is bowled, having switched to coaching at Middlesex following an illustrious career at Lord’s and with Surrey, England are flying high and head into the Ashes with a squad made up of plenty of players who have come through the county system – with another wave of talent on their heels and ready to make an impression. Ramprakash picked out batsman Gary Ballance and bowler Toby Roland-Jones as being among those to watch. “I look at someone like Ballance at Yorkshire, who is a hugely-talented left-handed batsman and can hit the ball very hard indeed,” he said. “I think if England have any problems with Eoin Morgan being injured then he has the game to slot in. “Ben Foakes is another talented batsman, at Essex, who I think could emerge this year and has the technique and temperament to have a very successful career. “The Overton twins at Somerset, Jamie and Craig, are just 19 and have a lot to offer. I think Craig in particular impressed with the Lions and will bowl some useful overs. “And at Middlesex we have a few talented youngsters too. “James Harris’s move has caught the eye, but I’m confident Roland-Jones will take his fair share of wickets this season and steal a few of the headlines for himself.” He believes the County Championship may be lacking some of the star names that decorated it in the 1980s, but added: “Every county has a decent squad of players, so if someone is injured or taken away by England there isn’t a weak link coming in to replace them. “In the 1980s you had more truly outstanding cricketers whether it was Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Malcolm Marshall, Richard Hadlee or Ian Botham. “I think first-class cricket now, especially in Division One, is of a higher all-round standard, with some really tough, workmanlike cricketers that know the conditions and make life difficult for you.”
