The New York Post was the first to report Thursday that Abbott, 27, has abruptly decided to leave the show. According to sources, the actor was at odds with Girls creator/costar Lena Dunham.
Indeed, a source tells Us, "He's sure the show will continue to do well, but as far as his character, he wasn't behind where it was going to end up."
"Chris was reluctant to do the show from the get go. He's a really great actor, the source material from the beginning was great and he was grateful to Lena. But he's at a point now where he has too many great film parts being offered to him to turn them down for something he's not 100 percent satisfied with," the source adds of the Martha Marcy May Marlene actor. "He feels good about his decision."
Abbott played the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Allison William's character Marnie on the hit HBO show. After splitting in Season 1, the couple rekindled their romance in the finale episode of Season 2. Marnie told Charlie, "I want to make you a snack every night. And I eventually want to have your little brown babies and eventually I want to watch you die."
