The man accused of shooting and killing a Texas teen, who was on his way home from an Astros game with his father last month, turned himself in peacefully to the police much to the praise of the victim's dad.

Accompanied by activist Quannell X, 34-year-old Gerald Wayne Williams went to Houston Police Headquarters Monday and was formally charged with the murder of 17-year-old David Castro.

X said Williams decided to turn himself in for his own safety, click2houston.com reported.

'He was concerned about his safety and about turning himself in to law enforcement,' the activist told reporters.

Williams was granted $350,000 bail, and if released must wear an ankle monitor and cannot drive without permission from the court, NBC News reported.

Williams already was on authorities' radar during the investigation into the deadly July 6 shooting.

'I spoke to him several times just to set up our meeting, and I spoke with him in person once,' HPD Detective Justin Brown said.

Police pieced together evidence against Williams before they charged him with murder on Friday.

His cellphone records were used to pinpoint his travel history, and police received many tips after Castro's father, Paul, pleaded for weeks with the public to come forward with any information.

His teen son was killed following an alleged dispute in which Williams exchanged hand gestures with Paul while they were stuck in slow-moving traffic.

Williams, who followed the Castros' vehicle for several miles off the freeway, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot into it, wounding David Castro in the head, then driving away.

'There are no words in the English language, nor should there be, to describe the pain that we are going through right now,' Paul said.

Paul Castro and his other son were not injured in the shooting.

The father pulled over and called 911. David Castro was rushed to the hospital where he was put on life support and died a few days later from his injuries.

On Monday, Castro thanked the public for the help in identifying Williams.

'I understand that there were a great number of tips that came in and they came in because you all were touched by this story and you could see your own children in my son, and so, I thank you for doing that,' he said during a press conference with Houston police. 'The fact that he safely surrendered and did not put any of the community members in jeopardy, none of the police department members in jeopardy, is the answer to my prayers.'

Castro said Williams' peaceful surrender 'just proves that love is greater than anger and hate,' and added that the family is still very much in the midst of grieving.

'There are no words in the English language, nor should there be, to describe the pain that we are going through right now,' he said.

The shooting is the latest in deadly road rage incidents across the country.

In July, a 56-year-old father-of-two was shot dead in front of his son while they drove home from a youth baseball game in Minnesota.

In May, six-year-old Aiden Leos was fatally shot while sitting in the backseat of his mother, Joanna Cloonan's, car as they drove along the 55 Freeway in Orange County en route to kindergarten.

A month later, Marcus Eriz, 24, was charged in the murder of the boy.
