GOP congressman says he will file articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary over Biden administration's handling of the border crisis

An Arizona lawmaker says he will file articles of impeachment against the Secretary of Homeland Security over the department's alleged handling of the border crisis.

Republican Rep. Andy Biggs announced Friday that he would be filing the articles against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas because he is 'a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation'.

'As a result of his actions and policies, America is more in danger today than when he began serving as Secretary,' Biggs wrote in a statement.

The representative argues that Mayorkas is 'willfully refusing to maintain operational control of the border and is encouraging aliens to enter our country illegally'.

Rep. Andy Biggs is filing articles of impeachment against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas over the department's alleged handling of the border crisis

Biggs has accused Mayorkas of being 'a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation' and 'willfully refusing to maintain operational control of the border and is encouraging aliens to enter our country illegally'

He asserts that under Mayorkas' leadership, Homeland Security officials are systemically allowing the coronavirus to spread by 'systematically releasing COVID-19 positive aliens into our communities'.

According to Biggs, the secretary is exposing American citizens to 'unnecessary and avoidable risk' and that he failed to uphold his oath of office.

' is presiding over a reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement, at the expense of the U.S. Constitution and the security of the United States,' said Biggs.

Secretary Mayorkas did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.

Biggs' announcement comes just days after Texas Rep. Chip Roy called for the impeachment of Mayorkas and President Joe Biden over their response to the border situation.

Customs and Border Protection data revealed 188,829 migrants were stopped at the southwest border in June, the sixth monthly increase since the start of 2021 and roughly 8,000 more since May

Customs and Border Protection data revealed 188,829 migrants were stopped at the southwest border in June, the sixth monthly increase since the start of 2021 and roughly 8,000 more since May

'Over the past several months, President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have blatantly and consistently refused to do their constitutional duty to take care that the immigration laws be faithfully executed, as required by Article II, endangering countless American and foreign lives in the process,' Roy told Fox News Tuesday.

'The Border is in total chaos,' Roy tweeted.

His concerns were echoed by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene who argued that the Administration's response was worsening the coronavirus pandemic in America.

'Biden and Harris have created a national security crisis and they are making you pay for it, while telling Americans they have to mask up, vaccinate, and prepare to lockdown again,' she said.

Data recently released by Customs and Border Protection revealed 188,829 migrants were stopped at the southwest border in June, the sixth monthly increase since the start of 2021 and roughly 8,000 more since May.

Mayorkas said last week that the data indicating a record surge in migrants coming to the southern border since Biden took office is 'misleading' because there are 'repeat offenders trying multiple times a month'.

'The number of apprehensions, the number of encounters does not equal the number of individuals encountered,' he said, adding that those expelled under Title 42 'often return and are expelled again.'

CBP data indicates that almost 1.2 million migrants could have already entered the US since the beginning of the year and more than 2.3 million people could cross into the US by the end of 2021, if the pace of apprehensions and those who avoid detection remain the same.

From January to May, 711,784 migrants were encountered by Customs and Border Protection at the southern border – five times the amount during the same period in 2020 under Trump.

The number of crossers already reported by CBP since the start of 2021 surpasses the population of several large U.S. cities, like Boston and Nashville.

Despite the surging number of migrants coming from outside the US and number of COVID cases rising within, just 14 percent of families encountered by Border Patrol were expelled under Title 42 in June.
