PICTURED: Father, 53, and daughter, 20, who were both killed by downed power line outside their LA home when he tried to move it and she tried to save him

A Californian father, 53, and daughter, 20, have died after being electrocuted when he tried to move a downed power line outside their home and she tried to save him.

Ferdinand Tejada and Janine Reyn Tejada were killed in the early hours of Monday in Panorama City, Los Angeles, where a rainstorm had downed live wires at the 14700 block of Tupper Street.

The devastated wife and mother of the victims called 911 around 2:45 a.m. after seeing her husband and daughter suffering electric shocks.

Authorities told her to stay back and not touch the wires.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived to find the bodies of the dad and daughter in their backyard and the lines still live.

The tragic incident unfolded when Ferdinand heard an explosion outside the family home and smelled smoke, the victims' wife and mother Mrs. Tejada told NBC Los Angeles.

The 53-year-old went outside to investigate what had happened and accidentally touched the wire, which gave him an electric shock, she said.

Their daughter then went to try to save him but came into contact with water which sent the electric current through her as well.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz said: 'She came in contact with the water and the water served as a conductor.'

Mrs. Tejada said she also felt a shock from the electric current but managed to get away to safety and dialed 911.

The LAFD told DailyMail.com the 911 dispatcher prevented a 'triple fatality' by talking to her and stopping her from trying to help her husband and daughter.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene but had to wait for the Department of Water and Power to turn off the power supply before approaching the victims as they could see the area was still energized.

'Our firefighters waited for the Department of Fire and Water to come cut power because he was beyond medical assistance as was his daughter,' said Ortiz.

The coroner's office later confirmed the identities of the victims.

A neighbor told Local21 he heard the noise from the electric shocks and all the power went out before he heard a commotion outside.

'You just hear 'brrrrrr', then suddenly the lights went off. I thought it's just, it's just a normal outage. Then about five minutes, I heard shouting,' said Mike Gallego.

Another neighbor told NBC Los Angeles she heard a 'bang' and then 'somebody scream'.

She said she looked outside but saw nothing and went back to sleep.

It was raining at the time of the incident but officials have not linked the weather to the two family members' deaths.

It is not clear what caused the power lines to come down with neighbors saying the rain and wind was not that strong that night.

'The two tragic deaths are a sobering reminder that live electrical wires can and will often result in death,' LADWP officials said in a statement.

Crews were seen repairing a power pole Monday hours after the tragic accident.

An investigation headed up by the LAPD into the victims' deaths is ongoing.
