Girl, 5, and young boy are dead and a one-year-old is in critical condition after a car carrying six people 'related to each other' flipped and crashed into a dam in Queensland - before a police car coming to the rescue also rolled over

Two children have died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a dam in Queensland.

The car was carrying two adults and four children from one family when it careened off Beaudesert Boonah Road in Wyaralong, southeast Queensland, and into a nearby dam about 2pm on Sunday.

The car was submerged for some time before rescue crews were able to pull the survivors out, a Queensland Police spokesman said.

Witnesses, including an off-duty doctor and paramedic, also assisted rescue crews in dragging the occupants of the car out of the water.

A five-year-old girl and boy believed to be between 12 and 14 were pronounced dead at the scene as medics tried to save two other toddlers.

A one-year-old boy was airlifted to Queensland Children's Hospital after paramedics performed CPR on him, while a girl believed to be about six months old was treated at the scene. She has since been taken to hospital as well.

The toddler remains in a critical condition.

The 23-year-old male driver and a 33-year-old woman were also driven to Princess Alexandra Hospital with injuries. Both remain in a stable condition.

Police Inspector Douglas MacDonald said the Landrover Discovery hit a guard rail and plunged into the nearby water.

It flipped on the way down and was semi submerged by the time witnesses reached the car.

'It's a tragic and confronting scene,' he said.

He said several people did what they could to free the people inside the car, and said without their help the outcome would have been even worse.

QAS Regional Operations Supervisor Mark Nugent agreed, saying that the off-duty paramedic and doctor in particular played a crucial role.

'The significance of it was quite severe for the passers-by, there's no doubt about that,' Supervisor Nugent said.

'Fortunately, and there is some fortunate parts about this, we had one of our critical care paramedics who was on a day off who passed by, and we also had a doctor who was a passer by who also rendered assistance at this location.

Shortly after, three rescue helicopters arrived, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed.

A police car was also on the way to the scene but crashed and rolled before reaching the dam.

The officers involved sustained minor injuries.

Motorists have been warned to find a different route with the road closed in both directions at Wyaralong.

Police divers and the Forensic Crash Unit are in attendance.
